Forcing the European (PAL) Kirby TV Channel (Flash 9) for run in NTSC-U Wii consoles

Hello world of GBAtemp!

Here in this post I will teach you how to force the European (PAL) WAD of Kirby TV Channel to run in a American (NTSC-U) Wii console by editing the main.dol of the WAD for load the "hidden" USA directories and be able to play in a NTSC Wii.
Kirby TV Channel was discontinued years ago, but I recently knew that its SWF (Adobe Flash applet) file used Flash 9 technology, so me and @Zorg1996 was interested in testing some Flash 9 games in this base WAD for it. :)

Special thanks goes to @Larsenv for teaching me how to do this, and @Zorg1996 for his interest in this WAD. ;)

Well, here's the procedure:

  1. First, grab your European (PAL) WAD of Kirby TV Channel.
  2. Unpack it with wwPacker tool (download link). Drag your Kirby TV Channel (PAL) WAD file and drop it into __wwunpacker.bat batch file.
  3. Once unpacked, open the unpacked WAD folder and uncompress the original 00000001.app file with wwcxtool. For this, open the CMD in the wwPacker folder and run this command: wwcxtool /u 00000001.app 00000001_dec.app
  4. NOTE: DO NOT DELETE THE ORIGINAL 00000001.app FILE, WE ARE USING IT LATER FOR USE THE SAME COMPRESSION LIKE THE ORIGINAL 00000001.app HAD!
  5. Now open the 00000001_dec.app file with a hex editor (I recommend HxD)
  6. step1.PNG
  7. Go to offset 00496530
  8. step2.PNG
  9. These strings in the right of the screen that indicates the directories to load will be replaced because we are going to replace the directories we want to load because the main.dol only loads from the European directory and not on the "hidden" USA directory. Have a look at this:
  10. step3.PNG
  11. Now, when you find the EU/XX/ directories (where XX is the language code), replace the following directories as shown:
  12. 1. EU/EN/ replace to US/EN/
  13. 2. EU/FR/ replace to US/FR/
  14. 3. EU/ES/ replace to US/ES/
  15. When you have finished you must have something like this:
  16. step4.PNG
  17. Save the changes made to the file.
  18. Once saved, a backup file (*.bak) of 00000001_dec.app will be generated. Delete that backup file, we are only using the edited file. DO NOT DELETE THE ORIGINAL 00000001.app FILE, WE ARE USING IT FOR USE THE SAME COMPRESSION LIKE THE ORIGINAL HAD!
  19. Now we have to recompress the edited 00000001_dec.app again with wwcxtool, using the original 00000001.app compression. For this, open the CMD in the wwPacker folder and run this command: wwcxtool /cr 00000001.app 00000001_dec.app 00000001_out.app
  20. Once finished compressing the edited 00000001_dec.app, you will get a new 00000001_out.app with THE original compression that had original 00000001.app file.
  21. Copy the edited 000000001_out.app to the unpacked WAD folder.
  22. Go to the unpacked WAD folder, then delete the original 00000001.app file from the unpacked WAD folder, then use the edited 000000001_out.app file by renaming the 00000001_out.app file to 00000001.app
  23. Now go to wwPacker folder, then drag your unpacked WAD file that you edited its 00000001.app and drop it into __wwpacker-NoMod.bat or __wwpacker-RegionFree.bat batch file.
  24. Once repacked the new WAD, try it out with Dolphin Emulator or in your NTSC-U Wii and see if the new WAD loads in NTSC-U!
Enjoy the Kirby TV Channel in your NTSC-U Wii!

Greetings!! :D

This is really cool. Can you still access the videos, or is it just the legacy channel shell now?
Curious about how functional this still is before trying to add it to my Wii.
No, you can't. The channel is now defunct, but you can use now for make Flash Game WAD injections.

Guess what? WiiWatch developers are bringing back the Kirby TV Channel alive after 8 years of it being discontinued. Is in Close-BETA.

    @Xdqwerty, Yeah, I'd recommend having another OS just in-case you want to play games.

    At least Linux doesn't contain spyware than what Windows has.

    @SylverReZ, cuz of lag?
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    @Xdqwerty, No. Whenever you use the internet on Windows, Microsoft collects personal data and installs bloatware that isn't necessarily needed, such as Edge.

    @SylverReZ,
    I recall @impeeza mentioned some trick about not having bloatware when installing windows where you set up your country to "world" or smh like that

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    Yes, you can debloat the operating system, but in some cases for me it just reinstalls them.

    @SylverReZ,
    I also recall my brother downloded a "non bloated" version of windows 11 on his pc

    @Xdqwerty yes, when you are installing Windows on the first steps you are asked for your current location, you MUST to select «international» so no bloatware is installed, because the bloatware is location based. if this night I have some time I will setup a VM and take screenshots.
