The wii redesign that was announced back in 2011, later dubbed the family edition, quite notably dropped the backwards compatibility with the gamecube. As many predicted the eventual motherboard was more or less the same as the old one but with the relevant ports unpopulated, they even used the same case and left the software intact.
The DVD drive was a slightly different matter though but buckchow, one of our newer members, was fiddling around with the drives and got it to work/boot. It turns out it was something like some of the earlier printers and a few mechanical tweaks have seen it all working.
As gamecube things for the Wii did not really head in this direction and without ports for the relevant hardware it is of little practical use but it is an interesting development and something of a final piece of the puzzle.
