GPD is reportedly working on an AMD 5800U-based handheld PC

Yesterday, AYA NEO, AMD 4500U-based handheld gaming PC, launched its Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. While their ambitious device might be the first AMD-based handheld gaming PC, they won't be the last. As reported by @geargeeksp on YouTube, GPD is also working on an AMD-based handheld gaming PC. According to their international marketing manager, YYang, their preliminary model is based on the 5800U processor and have it running Devil May Cry 5.

Everything is still at an early stage and the device's look has yet to be seen but GPD will indeed work on an AMD-based device. Apparently, it could be a new MAX model, rather than the GPD Win 4; meaning that it will feature a clamshell design. As for what a 5800U-based handheld means for PC games and emulators, you can watch @geargeeksp 's video that elaborates on the possibilities:

GPD has years of experience building such devices and it would be interesting to see what they come up with, especially given that other promising competitors have entered a market which GPD was once solely occupying. Would you like to have a 5800U-based handheld? And what about the design? Would you prefer a clamshell model or something more akin to the Win 3 with a sliding screen?

Yyang has mentioned Max 2 a lot like early January. The only new info is they jumped to AMD, which is a shame for people that wanted to use eGPU.

One cannot use eGPU with the AMD central processor?..
You need Thunderbolt 3, which isn't available on any AMD mobile laptop.

This is because Intel co-designed the Thunderbolt spec with Apple, and any "Official" Thunderbolt implementation needs to pass a certification...reviewed by Intel. So it's clearly in their benefit to simply not approve any mobile AMD SoC with Thunderbolt 3 so you have to buy an Intel-based laptop to do things like use an eGPU.

This will actually be "solved" when USB 4.0 gets widespread support, as USB 4.0 has basically the same specs as Thunderbolt 3 and can be compatible with any Thunderbolt 3 device so long as the host supports the feature. But the none of AMD's CPUs right now support USB 4.0, it won't be supported until Zen 4 releases so it won't be another couple years at best.

that is GPD for you ~ but at least 5800u is 100% a step forward
Well, that's technology as a whole not just from GPD. It's just that the big guns in the gaming world (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo etc) at least have the sense not to alienate their customers buy giving them a lifespan of at least 3/4 years before pushing for the next step. I know that GPD's IP's run Windows or Linux but there is still some kind of comparison to be made.

i don't mean the tech thing, when i say that is GPD for u , that means GPD is very competitive. (not a compliment )
