Due to some discounts, I’m currently considering a couple of laptops and I’m curious what people think of these:

Dell G3 15 (my price £1000):
https://deals.dell.com/en-uk/productdetail/5ree?AID=7988612&cjevent

Asus TUF A15 (my price £807):
https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9231667

The Dell is tempting but I’m concerned about how well they handle warranty in the UK, whether the extra heat may be an issue and I’m wondering if it’s even worth the extra £200 (or ~£150 if I upgrade the RAM in the Asus).

Would either machine be ok with a Rift S for something like HL:A or Doom VFR? I know the Asus would need a Type-C to displayport adapter.

Any opinions welcome, thank you.

I feel if they have to ask what kind of pc they should get, they probably won't need usb type c ports
Hubs are not a must but they sure are convenient. Instead of attaching and detaching 4/5 cables every time you move the laptop, now it's just one. And they become quite cheap recently.

The RAM upgrade is definitely worth it. I'm regretting my 8GB even though I don't game that much.

Even though the dell laptop has better specs but I would say avoid it, due to bad customer service and overheating problem, I would say go for Asus instead.

Ryzen is a good option, not too sure about apple arm, might want to wait to see how that goes as a whole first

Try to wait till Q1/Q2 2021 if you can. There are gonna be new cpus, gpus in laptop SKUs which should give you much better bang for your buck. Most gaming mid to high-end laptops still use the RTX 2000 gpus, which are 2018 tech. AMD should be getting Navi 2X laptop gpus in the market very, very soon. And they'll probably be better than Nvidia's Ampere (RTX3000) offerings because of the latter using a much worse manufacturing node (samsung 8N) in power efficiency.

Unfortunately my current laptop is playing up and I’d rather get a replacement while I can get these extra discounts and stock is actually available.

In the case of the Argos one though, I will be able to return it if I see a better deal on BF.

I do plan on using the Type-C port if I get the Asus for my Rift S, yeah it wont be the best performance but at least I can use it in a different room with Steam VR.

I’ve checked and the RAM can be upgraded relatively cheaply (around £50), although obviously that eats into the savings.

Dell is a lot more unreliable than Asus imo
i've had and seen plenty of asus hardware fail on me or on friends, or arrive with some defect that makes it really hard to enjoy the product
i haven't even heard of a single dell product failing in recent times at all

asus also deliberately suffocates their ryzen laptops on purpose to try to kneecap the performance

I’ve been reading/watching that apparently the Asus has poor thermal design, does anyone have any experience with this?

Ironically it was concerns about extra heat from the 2060 which was making me lean towards the Asus.

So, I finally checked these links. The g3 had a good review, but the build seems to be cheap (specifically the edge where the palm rest meets the backplate. It was mentioned as being sharp. Can probably file it down if it’s real bad). I was looking at both of these as I am in the market for a new laptop too. I was leaning more towards the dell because of my past experiences. Also, for the “expandability” seems not only can you have the m.2 ssd, but a 2.5 sata drive as well. The cooling also seems to be good. If not, then one can use a cooling pad.

Thanks for the responses, I think I'm going for the Asus, apparently the Dell has dodgy hinges and I suspect this would become an issue for me in time.

I also ended up getting the Argos care discounted (still cheaper than the Dell, especially with care), so I've got more peace of mind.
