That's the connection between your computer and router, not between your computer and the internet. Use a site such as speedtest.net to see what your actual internet speed is at any given time (and be sure to pause all downloads and stuff in the house before you test).

Speed tests like the one on speedtest.net are still limited by the speed of the local network, so if his local wireless network is slow then he won't notice any difference. I think that's what he implied himself, that he has a 100mbps Internet connection but the local network doesn't allow him to achieve anywhere near that.

Several things that people should be aware of when buying Internets:
  • The speeds advertised by ISPs are always maximums and you'll rarely reach that speed on a download. All of their terms and conditions will tell you that peak usage periods may affect your actual speed.
  • Other advertised speeds can be affected by the distance from your house to your local telephone exchange. Connections degrade over greater distances.
  • Local wireless interference can affect your network speeds.
The first two, you can't really do anything about. The third, you could get a router the operates on both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands to reduce interference and/or, as someone already mentioned, an 802.11ac device to increase the maximum network speed.

The Monster Cable business plan: 'Let's stick a fancy-looking mould on the end of all our cables, make some minor material/technical changes and imply those changes make a significant difference, all whilst encouraging retailers to add over 1500% markup to the price.'

It works for them because they know people are stupid enough to pay through the nose... because OMG SHINY!.

Nah, I think he was just looking at the connection thing.

1 - Internet in the US sucks. If you're even within 100 miles of a place that might possibly offer 100 megabits, you're lucky.

2 - Most people I've seen look at that marker in the bottom-right and read off of that.

3 - For ethernet it'll read 100 megabits, for wireless-G it'll read ~54, which causes this confusion a lot.

The best place to look for the actual internet speed is in the modem status page which can usually be found by going to 192.168.0.1
