My apologies if this is obvious but I cant really find the answer im looking for anywhere...
Without knowing any of this, i tried a copy of NFS HP in my xbox which updated my dash to 12416 and then promptly gave me a cant read disc error.
Is any of this going to work for me or do I just need LT + now?

Many moons ago i flashed my fathers (banned) 360 with ixtreme 1.4 no stealth in order to be able to play all games regardless of wave or stealth etc.
Now he has the kinect what would be the best course of action in order to play it?
Can he simply just update the dash? or will he need to follow the tutorial in the original post?
Ive read about the leaked dash running fine on banned consoles and there also seems to be a kinect update without the ap2.5 available too..
I'm quite confused to say the least lol and would appriciate so much any help anyone could give!!

You have three option
If it is a toshiba/Samsung or Hitachi it may not matter how you update it as AP2.5 does not apply for some of these drives

You can update the dash with this method on this thread and be fine for a while but when a new dash comes out via games you may have to flash your drive later.
You can update your drive firmware to iXtreme LT+ (Toshiba/Samsung, BenQ and Lite-on drives). You may also have to update when new dash comes out with a new protection.
If it is a toshiba/Samsung or Hitachi it may not matter how you update it as AP2.5 does not apply for some of these drives

I have an old Samsung ms25 running a pretty old version of ixtreme (something like 1.4 or 1.5 or 1.6, it doesn't require wave-patching or using the activate disc). I thought that Samsung drives didn't have ap25 checks, but AC:B doesn't seem to work for me. Do I need to upgrade my FW?
If you spoofed it to a samsung from an AP25 compatible drive then things get tricky.
If it is was originally a samsung you more likely need to update the dashboard- Assassin's creed brotherhood likes to have somewhat later dash.
If you are on a samsung and are going to upgrade the drive firmware then go to "1.6 NS" aka 1.6 non stealth- it was hack or 1.6 and although it lacks AP25 support your drive lacks it as well.

If I update the dash, can I just use the official MS update then, instead of this workaround? Can I also skip updating my FW as well? My 360 is flagged for a ban, so I'm just interested in a FW that's the simplest to work (no wave-patches, using the disc, or worrying about future updates), which is what I have going for me right now

If you have a samsung there was never any need for this workaround- the drive can not do AP2.5 checks even if it wanted to. Yes you can skip the DVD firmware update* if yours works.

Ok, I updated to 2.0.12611.0, the latest version from January 19th isn't on that link FAST posted, and the official MS site http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Support/UpdateSteps only seems to go as far as 9199. AC:B still won't read, I've tried a version that wasn't patched for ap2.5 using abgx360 and one that was, but neither work
. Non-ap2.5 games like Dead Space 2 still read though. Any ideas?

My xbox is been banned for a year i dont care about that what i dont understand first i could play ac brotherhood and then it says unrecognized disc and now i am stuck with this kinect dashboard.

i have done this procedure and all of the games work well, the new wwe all stars game has an new update. i'm wondering if applying the update affect anything or will i still be able to play ap2.5 games such as AC:B
The WWE update will overwrite the beta you are at and lose you the ability to play any AP2.5 games* (assassin's creed brotherhood, need for speed hot pursuit, fable 3, cod black ops, cod modern warfare 2 and halo reach).
*the betas of the next dash appear to activate AP2.5 for all games - anything without SSv3 will not work (possibly excluding some of the releases from before/around fifa 09).

You can update the DVD drive firmware to LT+ and patch the game iso to use SSv3 (various patches and ABGX360 should work). That allows the AP2.5 games to work.
Only JTAG users can patch around it in software.

Hmmm it's been a long time since I messed with Retroarch on the PS3 but probably most of the games will run just fine
