Do you have a USB device plugged in besides your HDD? I know I can't install to USB if my Skylanders portal is plugged in...
By any chance do you have another USB device plugged in for vWii homebrew and games if so you need to remove that before trying to install to USB.UPDATE......
Now nothing will install to USB....retail games, eshop, dlc, updates, etc..
Installing to NAND works....then I can move to USB via data management copy/move
EDIT....whats the difference between wupinstaller and the GX version?
How old is the hdd as that could be about to totally break down.No just the one external HDD (powered seperate).
I haven`t made any changes to system or the setup, haven`t moved anything around, haven`t unplugged nothing, etc.. since the last time it work properly
I have even reinstalled the wup installer....still same results.
WUPInstaller GX2 has a pretty GUI. Other than that, they're the same.UPDATE......

No for wiiu it does not matter what usb port you use. It only matters for vWii homebrew.Hmm... Did you try to change USB port used for your HDD on your Wii U? I'm not sure, but maybe homebrews might be sensible to which port you are connected to.
Like I already said any port works unlike the original wii. And wup gx does exactly the same as y mod so won't make any difference. In saying that the usb port could be broken so try another lol.So trying another version of WUPinstaller wouldn`t help? OR would it be worth a try?
I will try another USB port....does it matter which port (as with the original Wii it had to be a certain port)
It is always needed due to the wiius usb ports only outputting half the power of any other USB ports in existence lol for some reason.I`d try/test another HDD but don`t have any Y-cable ones or another external powered drive.
Is the Y-cable always needed when USB powered or is dependent on certain drives (some will work & some won`t?)
Whatever port your USB storage is plugged into is assigned as port one on boot if you then switch the wiiu off and put the usb storage into another USB port it will at next boot be assigned as USB 1 again.I was not aware that it read off of second usb port. I'm only suggesting it since ftpii everywhere doesn't. the ports on the wii u don't have individual denominations. they appear to be assigned at boot up, so usb01 could be on the front or the back, either one.
