Be me trying to load the game desperately through normal means when I keep getting "Preparing update..."

But is there even one?? I'm using DNS so it fails but I'm seeing no sort of this update anywhere. Is this something to be taken to the homebrew section? Am I being an idiot for some reason?

The latest version is 1.1.6 which came out well over a month ago, maybe you simply removed the update or moved it to the storage which doesn't contain the game!
