Metroid Prime fangame Prime 2D releases its first demo

Prime 2D is a fan-made remake of Metroid Prime in the style of the 2D Metroid games, developed by a group known as Team SCU. It is not, however, aiming to recreate a 1:1 version of Metroid Prime in 2D. Instead, it uses familiar elements from that game, like locations, music and enemies, and adapts and translates them to 2D as a commentary on the shift from 2D to 3D gaming. "Instead of copying the source material exactly, we are instead focused on taking the core concepts, translating those, and then implementing them in a logical 2D solution," reads a post by one of the team members from their official forums. "By doing this we allow ourselves to focus on building a good game first and foremost, and then using that as a base on which to create a familiar experience, rather than constraining ourselves to trying to implement 3D ideas in 2D space."

According to a post on their forums, work on Prime 2D started in 2004 and has continued irregularly since then, seeing several shifts in personnel along the way. After a lengthy silent period, Team SCU released their first full demo on their official forums on April 1, as a reference to a long-running gag of releasing fake demos on April Fool's Day. Currently, it is only runnable on Windows and requires a mouse and keyboard to play. It is unknown if gamepad controls will be added to this demo or future releases. You can download the Prime 2D demo at this link or at the source link below.

Nintendo will take it down whenever they'll notice it, but it doesn't matter honestly. As long as it doesn't make too much noise before it's final release, it's ok

EDIT : Now I've finished it, it's just so damn good. I just would have prefered it to separate more from the actual Prime 3D game and get set in a different planet, with a different story etc ... But it's still so damn great. I hope it get finished.

cool, hope it's actually finished though
people are here memeing about how nintendos gonna dmca their shit when i'm here worrying if the thing is actually going to be updated and finished or if it's going to end up cancelled or dead like most of these nintendo fan projects.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

doomed to share the same fate as AM2R
the same fate as AM2R but probably worse since most of these ambitious nintendo fan projects never get finished even without the DMCA
AM2R got released on the internet, people backed that shit up, and now it's literally one of the most revered common fangames on the market.
this is probably going to get cancelled soon either due to the DMCA or other problems

Yeah back when AM2R was in development, there was a lot of Metroid fangames that even tho they were some demos (and some were really damn good), I don't think there's something else other than AM2R that finally was released
Btw, FSMR (https://fsmrmetroid.blogspot.com) came back, tho it doesn't have as many updates as AM2R did, but it still looks cool.
It's unlikely that those games will ever release, but it's not impossible at all, and honestly Prime 2D looks so polished already it would be a shame for it to not be completed.

no, people who make fangames with the specific intent to use official assets.
this could've very well be a prime insipired metroidvania of its own.
What lesson ? To not use franchises they like ? Who cares about the DMCA anyway, it's already too late when Nintendo is aware of such projects. You know a Metroid Prime fangame and a search-action game doesn't have the same appeal

Way to rub it in Metroid fans, it’s bad enough Nintendo isn’t providing to this franchise, but now fans need to get teased by a game they will never get to see the full version :( Wow 15yrs in development for this too

Indeed, there's a reason AM2R is called another Metroid 2 remake. Remember Vonricher's Metroid SR388?

Has it not occurred to anyone that maybe the developer decided the project was too ambitious and decided to release the demo fully aware that a takedown notice from Nintendo would be the perfect excuse to abandon it?

Not sure if the devs are new, but Nintendo don't mess around when it comes to their IP. The game will most likely get C&D before the full game comes out since a lot of websites are talking about it in recent news.
