I got a small question! I wanna try the Mother 2 translation demo from the discord but every time I start the game with English names like Ness the name switch to ????
Try compiling Sterophonick's build on gitlab. That build makes "Don't Care" actually put in the correct names. Make a save with Sterophonick's build and compile and use Jeffman's build. Jeffman's build doesn't have some of the things Sterophonick's build has but Jeffman's build is the better one because it's cleaner.

How much of the game is currently translated?

Well, I get this far...

"Building the ROM
  1. Run build.ps1 (like in Step 4).
  2. The default compiled ROM is copied to bin/m12.gba."

Like in step 4? The only step 4 I see is... "Copy EarthBound ROM to bin/eb.smc."

Step 5 seems more likely, but when I duplicate that, I get "TODO: what's the Mac version of armips?" (I am on a Win 10 PC, and yes I've made sure I have the windows armips.exe in the "bin" folder)

And this is where I am currently stuck. Joined the Discord, but didn't find anything helpful there. If anyone has any input I'd appreciate it.

where do you have the bin folder? it should be in the folder with build.ps1. the build.ps1 shouldn't be in bin. bin should be in the same place as build.ps1

Looking forward to this because I know someone who can't get the SNES version of the game running on their old 3DS. Is this going to include the changes from MaternalBound like the subtitle Giygas Strikes Back, for example? Those were after all also based on Clyde Mandelin's comparisons.

OK, so there have been several fan translations of Mother 1+2 over the years, but here, we finally have a translation of the Mother 2 side of the game that translates the whole game, and not just the menus! (And it only took 16 years!)

It's a translation that uses a Variable-Width-Font (VWF), just like Earthbound. It is being led by Jeffman, who also did work on the Mother 3 Fan Translation. It also has Clyde Mandelin's Mother 1 Patch incorporated into it.

Currently the core of the VWF is mostly complete. It still has to be implemented in several other areas of the game though. There also still have to be a lot of fixes with the script and other parts of the translation before a beta patch can be officially released.

It is being unofficially dubbed "Earthbound - The Giygas Chronicles"

All credit for the text and the coding goes to Jeffman.
Omg I thought this was impossible. Keep up the good work!

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol
