Nintendo has worked on a platform-agnostic and adaptive controller, according to Reggie Fils-Aimé

fils aime nintendo.JPG

In a recent interview with Inverse, Nintendo of America's former president, Reggie Fils-Aimé shared details about a project from the house of Mario that we have yet to see materialise: a platform-agnostic, adaptive controller. In the interview, Fils-Aimé said that the project was being worked on back in 2019 as he was preparing his retirement and was part of a larger, industry-wide initiative. The latter considered the Xbox Adaptive Controller, announced in 2018, as “as a jumping-off point to create something that would be platform-agnostic and adaptable by any consumer”.

“Imagine an adaptive controller that you could play with your latest Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo platform. That's what we were working on three years ago,” Nintendo of America's former president detailed in the interview.

However, Fils-Aimé isn't sure if this effort is still being worked on or not. “But also, my hope is that controller — and the ability for that controller to connect with all of the various systems — is launched and shared with consumers as quickly as possible,” he added. “I do believe the best solution is an industry solution that can work for all of the dedicated gaming platforms and for PC, and can truly be tailored to the player depending on their physical capabilities and what they can do.”

You can read the full interview with Reggie Fils-Aimé in the source link below where he shares his hopes and vision for the future of the gaming industry.

PC has consistently been bad for videogames for over a decade.

Every horrible anti consumer practice originated directly from PC.

Paid mods
DLC
Microtransactions
Early access unfinished games
"Skins"
Loot boxes

The list goes on.
You can avoid all that on PC if you want, but console gaming is locked to the digital store of the console maker.

Well, at least neither are as bad as Stadia (it still exists, yeah).

i've been using ds4windows and switch mission control for years now, seems like nintendo is priding them self on a feature that should come standard, flinging the word agnostic like the second coming of Christ

It is big news, for accessibility and also for people who don't want to adapt to different platforms controllers.

People complaining about drift, you know drift is as much an issue on every controller since Xbox 360 than it is for the joycons? I fix dozen a week, I actually fix more PS4 and Xbox One sticks than I do Joycons. But what do I know? I've only been doing that for 17 years...

The controllers I use in place of the joycons have not developed drift. Sure, they may one day, but drift appears to occur far, far
faster on the joycons. All of the joycons I've owned quickly developed drift. This is possibly related to the size of the joycons speeding up the process. My concerns aren't specifically about drift anyway, as that is just one of a variety of issues: It is the recent decline in overall quality compared to past products. For example: going on to release a Pro Controller with a terrible d-pad? How was that allowed to slip through? (Though the quickly-developing drift is a significant issue when taking into consideration the price point of the joycons.) Workaround: pick up a cheap adapter and use some other controller without these various issues. This is not something Nintendo (or other companies) should in any way be given a pass on with these price points. I get that a lot of this is probably a result of Nintendo pivoting to a home/portable console hybrid, but it is still pretty disappointing. I will be happy to praise their hardware when their hardware standards match the quality of their software once again. But anyway, apologies for going somewhat off topic with my rant against their hardware in general.

MTX originated on mobile and made the jump to PC and consoles around the same time. DLC has always been around, it just used to be called "expansions." It's also not a problem as long as it's well done. Skins and lootboxes also came to consoles at the same time as PC, the games that first implemented them were/are multi-platform.

Early access is the one and only point you're correct on, but nobody's forcing you to buy those games, and they're clearly labeled as such. It's a boon for people who want to influence the direction a game's development takes.

And not to state the obvious, but console games have always been developed on PC. Gaming as we know it just straight up wouldn't exist without the platform.

Most game controllers can already be used interchangeably.
The only ones that can't are console locked by the manufacturer.

What you're saying about joycon drift is due to confirmation bias.
You dont fix a lot of joycons because Nintendo fixes all joycons for free.

The joycon drift problem is so ubiquitous that the manufacture had to create a special repair program :rofl2:

The difference between PC and console is the openness of the platform.
Consoles are locked down to prevent users from modifying their experience.
PCs are generally unrestricted, which is why many games are afflicted with DRM.

Mods, skins, and DLC are the same thing.
Consoles previously didn't have them because consoles lacked network connectivity and storage devices.
Loot boxes and microtransactions are the same thing.
These came about for the same reason as mods/skins/DLC; addition of network and storage to consoles.

A little consideration and you'll discover that everything starts with PC because they are adaptable, open environments.

paid mods originate from mods which were also a PC exclusive thing... and where are the paid mods these days?
DLC isn't bad. Maybe EA's form of locking minor gameplay additions behind a paywall is abhorrent, but back when they were called expansion packs they offered a LOT of good things to the game
microtransactions were a mobile thing
for the early access games, most PC 'early access' games like ULTRAKILL and BeamNG aren't nearly as buggy as most of the triple A EA unfinished stuff. i could give you that but this was an example of PC doing it well and consoles getting the worse version (as they always do)
just seems like another version of microtransactions which originated from mobile anyways
loot boxes are literally the only thing you have on this list, which console games ended up exploiting way more than PC stuff these days. I can't think of many PC games with lootboxes while they're everywhere in gacha mobile games. All your hate should be directed at the smartphones and not the computer

A 10 year old PC with a decent GPU can run anything on mid/high, as good or better than a console, for cheaper.

That is just your ignorance on PC speaking.

From the savings you get from the constant, better sales on PC, you could upgrade it more than you would need to, if you were so inclined.

Consoles, as DRM, hardlocked, weaker PCs they are today, will definitely die, and sooner than you think, if they keep bringing nothing new to the end user.

At this rate, next gen consoles will be no different than what Steam Machines were trying to be.
Nah, a 10 year old pecee can't run latest games with the settings you see on the XBSX or PS5.
Close, but not quite.
But you have it right. Most games become cheaper on pecee.

I spent more on my PC then I did on the last 3 generations worth of console hardware. I'd need to invest a significant amount more to upgrade it to PS5 levels. It's to the point where I might as well build a new PC.

Yet y’all don’t know what the word means. The future of the world is depressing.

Sceptic the top synonym for agnostic.

The other problem is pricing, just check on Amazon - the price of PS5 Dualsense has always been cheaper than the 5 years old Joycon. Dualsense has a mousepad, stronger haptic, adaptive triggers, LED lights and better buttons and build - so much tech in it, yet cheaper than the low quality Joycon.

The Dualsense officially supports iOS and Mac and currently sold in Apple stores, it also support PC games - especially newer games, they have the same haptic and adaptive triggers feature in PS5 games. In a way, Sony has already created a platform-agnostic controller.
