Nintendo Switch firmware update 12.0.0 available for download

A new update has been detected! Nintendo has just put out a system software update for the Nintendo Switch, which brings the console up to official firmware version 12.0.0. This time around, we have an actual reason as to what this update entails: a “rare” save backup error had been resolved. The changelog mentions nothing else, despite it being an update from 11.0.1 to 12.0.0. If you haven’t already learned by now, don’t update your hacked systems until you have the all-clear from established scene hackers.

Ver. 12.0.0 (Released April 5, 2021)
We fixed the issue with the save data backup feature, where in rare cases, the automatic backup of save data is interrupted if a communication error occurs during completion of the save data backup process.

If I update my sysnand to 12.0 will my atmosphere emunand at 11.0.1 still work?
I also want to know if it's safe to update the sysnand in 12.0 if we keep it clean and don't use cfw on it
Technically, yes. Your emunand will still work. However, you won't be able to boot into stock firmware until Hekate (or whatever bootloader your using) is updated to work with 12.0.0 . You could do a "genuine boot" to get into stock firmware, but that will burn your fuses.

tl:dr Don't update your sysnand yet unless burning fuses doesn't bother you.

If you care about the ability to have CFW, then it is not worth it to update sysnand to latest.

*edit*
I forgot about atmos users, but then SciresM already said this was a major update and is not compatible with atmos as it stands and will take some time to get it there.

I feel a SXOS update coming....

Someone correct me if I am mistaken, but I believe it will break your cfw because someone either here or on Reddit said they did just that, and they could not boot into cfw
Ok I gave it a try.
I updated my sysnand to 12.0 and I can still boot my 11.0.1 emunand without a problem.

To add, it's also found about a "Cradle" called Aula.

I really hope Nintendo finally adds official support for Bluetooth headsets/headphones. It’s really ridiculous that they released a portable system without Bluetooth support. I did buy a 3RD party adapter, but I seriously wish I didn’t have to do that m.
Discord support would be amazing!

I am very curious about the reasons for this update being a major version bump. Let's wait and see what else turns up.

I updated both of my Mariko units, but I didn't update the exploitable one. I had to in order to download pac-man 99, and I also bought trails of cold steel iv. I downloaded both to my animal crossing and 3d world switches. I don't want to download them to my neon switch until atmosphere is updated, even though it's not hacked atm.

does anyone knows if it is possible that the first switch power can be upgraded using a specific new dock?
This dock has a new tegra inside, get some data for the graphic and let the initial tegra in the switch manage musique, IA, ...
I think that the quantity of data traveling from switch to dock is larger than the bus size in the usb C connector

So how is that extra data being transferred? Is it magic pixie dust? Because I've been hankering for some magic pixie dust ever since my supplier was arrested.

Seriously though, that would be a good solution for future-proofing current switches when in docked mode, but they'd still lag behind in handheld mode. Unless someone comes along with a "handheld dock" you can attach the Switch to while still keeping it portable. That could have the advantage of working with the Switch Lite too if a future upgrade allowed it.

Wait what exactly is the thing about burning fuses? I updated my sysMMC to 12.0 for online use and my emuMMC is always offline. I never use Hekate to boot sysMMC and always clean-boot. What does this mean for me? If I start my emuMMC now and burn a fuse can Nintendo ban my Switch if I go online on sysNAND next time?

EDIT: To clarify I have a launch-day Switch with a clean SysMMC and a always-offline emuMMC, Atmosphere CFW, no modchips or anything and I don't care about downgrading. I just need emuMMC to dump my physical games for Yuzu/RyuujinNX.

In simple terms, the Switch has a bunch of fuses inside and when you update the firmware, it burns a fuse. If you want to downgrade to an earlier version of HOS, it will look at the burnt fuses and see that the version you're trying to run is older than one that you have previously installed (because there are more fuses burnt than there would be if that version were the latest), and won't let you run it.

So if you want to keep the option of downgrading, you can't update and "normal-boot" your OFW or it will burn the fuses and remove the possibility. Booting your CFW through Hekate, however, doesn't burn any fuses, so you can keep an old version of the firmware in your sysNAND and just update the emuNAND's firmware, thus preserving your fuses and possibility of downgrading while still allowing you to use the newer firmware.

What I don't know is what happens when we run out of fuses to burn. Will Big N just stop updating the firmware? Will they just shrug at losing that little bit of control and carry on issuing updates? Will they try to force everyone to upgrade to the Switch 2 or whatever it's called with more fuses? It's a mystery.

Then you have nothing to worry about.

Thanks for clearing that up, I was just worried if Nintendo bans according to fuse-count. So once AMS is updated I just boot emuMMC and update that offline via Daybreak? And out of curiosity, are there unlimited fuses?

There has never been a ban because of a fuse-count mismatch. I've heard that there are 32 fuses. If you're not preventing fuse-burning when updating and you're on the latest firmware, you would have 14 fuses burned as of now.

Hmm interesting, what would happen if Nintendo releases more than 18 new updates?

My guess is that they will start to spread out the fuse burning a bit more to ration the number of remaining fuses. Not every single update burns a fuse, as you can see in the attached chart. I'm assuming the reason 12.0.0 doesn't burn another fuse is because they want to save fuses for later on, just in case. At this point, the burnt fuses aren't stopping much, so I don't think it's a huge deal if they run out.

There’s currently 64 that they check, and there’s an additional 32 they could start checking if they wanted.
They don’t have anything to worry about.

A major version bump for a minor bug fix, must be a lot more stability under the hood.
There is a lot of changes under the hood. Can fully expect more home brews to be broken than a minor update.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Only hardware revisions could stop a game form working on a lower version to get technical.
If it ran on x firmware, then there is nothing physically stopping it from running on a lower firmware as long as the system has not been hardware revised.
They can mess with your cart slot and game controller firmware, not HW per se but can achieve the same effect.

the legal drinking age here in the US is 21, as some of you may know, but i think either it should be 18 or the age you're an adult should be 21.

  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and i know what you may be thinking, "why become an adult at 21? doesn't that mean that banging an 18 year old would be illegal?"
first of all, being in a relationship with someone who's 18 is technically ok, as long as it started when they were 18, but the age gap is still weird depending on how old you are. besides, the age of consent differs between different states
    +1
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
also my reasoning for adult age being 21 is because the reason that's the drinking (and now smoking) age is because it "gives them more time to think rationally and not drive drunk"
so you should have that extra time to mature and think rationally before going to serve in the military or vote

also, i think the voting age should match the adult and drinking ages too, because by the logic of giving them time to mature and think rationally so they don't drive drunk, then they should also have that time to mature and think rationally so they can think for themselves
