nintendo has a bad habit of spiting us by throwing a wrench into our scenes on the way out
oh well, cias are pretty easy to find, it's just a shame that something so convenient has to go

I like to think Nintendo gave us a heads up warning when they released the 11.8 firmware. Some of us may hate that they're finally protecting their CDN servers, which they have every right and obligation to.

Look in the positive side to this...
Can you imagine if Big-N released the last firmware and turned on their server security without (indirectly) telling us? So many of those obscure and rare to find games amassed and collected over the years would have been lost to the 3DS community.

We were given ample time in amassing and archiving those games before this happened. I'm just glad the entire library collection was preserved by several people out there who knew what was at stake.

I always had the habit of making CIA backups so i had almost everything saved already. The only few missing stuff (mostly patches and DLCs) i downloaded with Villain and USB Helper.

Maybe Freeshop was too convenient, you always heard things like "you can just re-download later from Freeshop" but i'm glad i did the backups. Personally i never liked relying on servers that could go down in the future.

I'd say the domain for the site that hosted the title keys actually was DMCA'd by Nintendo, and the domain host removed the IP address from it's listing. So now all ISPs that get all the DNS packets would just receive the packets as "up-for-sale" domain being stored in their DNS servers. Not in any way related to freeShop, but I thought that this would be the exact reason why it happened, I know it did happen to a certain ROM site about a year ago and they had to switch domain providers.

That's why everyone's getting the "sponsored listings" instead of the site. So yeah, all that remains now is just the site's IP address, which can only be accessed by typing in its IP address.

But if anything, I'm sure freeShop could live on as some other project that doesn't connect to the CDN servers.

I'm new to this. To get FBI, I need to install CFW, right? My ds is 11.8.0-41U

Is there any risk in installing CFW and can I run a .cia of, say Pokemon Ultra Sun as well as any other downloaded games?
Yes, you need CFW.

By now there is basically no risk if you follow the guide (use this one) to the letter, and yes, you can run any game that you can get as a .cia, as well as previously downloaded programs.

Will everything eventually break or will the really obscure stuff like say, Mystery Case Files still work because they dont care? I'm wondering if I should be trying to get obscure stuff I probably wont find on any other sites.

We don't know the extent of Nintendo's blocking for the 3DS games on their CDN server. Assume the worst case scenario that all the 3DS games are going to be gone later. If Nintendo ends up doing a limited block for their own 1st party titles (or maybe several 3rd party ones), then be happy if it's not all that bad.

Collect whatever that's still available if you believe those games are going to be gone for good some day in the future. Use either freeShop and/or CIAngel if you like directly downloading on the 3DS or go with Villain3DS if rather obtain your games on desktop/computer.

You'll need to look up how to go about finding that title site (or that iso site) to obtain the last updated encTitleKeys.bin. Check here.

I guess I'll work with Villain 3DS since I'm out of space and unwilling to delete Ultra Moon even though I dont like it. The idea of redownloading that from the eshop means its on my 3DS forever.

Basically to those of you who keep asking, Freeshop doesn't work on any console regardless of firmware. However if you updated to 11.8, you have put yourself at risk of being banned for using pirated games previously downloaded from Freeshop. I just didn't update my system and hope to get the most out of the games I downloaded before Freeshop crashed.

I dont think previously downloaded games will do anything. Its when you download a game on sleepmode from freeshop on 11.8 thats going to send ticket information thats going to put your console at risk for a ban.

freeShop does work for now, except with certain titles (here is a list). If console A is on 11.7, console B is on 11.8 and they do the exact same things, either both will get banned or none will get banned. There's also an off chance that either one of them gets banned and the other one doesn't.

There's no point in staying on 11.7 or lower.

if you are on 11.8 and play previously downloaded free shop games, it's still going to send a ticket to get your console/NNID banned because it's not a legit file and Nintendo can still track it
