NPD Game Sales 2018 #1: January

The NPD Group is an analytics board that keeps track of game sales for the United States, much like Japan's Media Create. Each month, they release a charted list of the best-selling games, and give both industry and the public insight into how new releases perform on launch. Today, NPD has put out their sales data for January 2018.

In total, revenue was up a whopping 59% year-over-year from 2017, generating an estimated $1.096 billion dollars. Last month also saw the release of Dragon Ball: FighterZ and Monster Hunter: World, and both were the most successful launches in history for their respective franchises. Video game sales accounted for about $517 million, which is also up 51% from last year. January hasn't seen such successful numbers since 2011, where numbers reached $549 million.

Hardware saw the most drastic increase, going from last year's $127 million, to this year's $278 million, a massive increase of 119%. All of the big three; Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo "preformed well", according to the NPD.

Sports games also find themselves doing well, with UFC, FIFA, and Madden all placing on the cusp of the list. Nintendo sees success with their exclusive games on both their platforms, with Pokemon doing well per usual, alongside Super Mario and Zelda.

Hold the dam phone, Minecraft is top 5 for 3DS. What the actual fuck. I suppose if kiddos are willing to put up with crappy touch screen controls on a phone their willing to put up with a seriously diluted experience .

It's bizarre to see some "physical reported only" games to sell more than some games with digital sales included. Not bad for Nintendo (and those like PUGB).
also it's bizarre to see GTA V after all of those years....but I can understand WHY on that one at least: Rockstar's microtransactions. Those servers ain't feeding themselves.

    @SylverReZ, cuz of lag?
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    @Xdqwerty, No. Whenever you use the internet on Windows, Microsoft collects personal data and installs bloatware that isn't necessarily needed, such as Edge.

    @SylverReZ,
    I recall @impeeza mentioned some trick about not having bloatware when installing windows where you set up your country to "world" or smh like that

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    Yes, you can debloat the operating system, but in some cases for me it just reinstalls them.

    @Xdqwerty yes, when you are installing Windows on the first steps you are asked for your current location, you MUST to select «international» so no bloatware is installed, because the bloatware is location based. if this night I have some time I will setup a VM and take screenshots.

    @Psionic Roshambo, Yeah, BonziBuddy was both spyware and ad-ware. It collected children's personal information without consent as well as display fake Windows popups.
