PlayStation 4 gets 6.0 firmware update as well

IMG_1316.JPG

If you thought Nintendo was the only one with a big 6.0 firmware update releasing soon, then you were wrong. Because Sony has just pushed out a surprise update for PlayStation 4 version 6.0 firmware. In terms of features, it does absolutely nothing except state "This system software update improves system performance," which is akin to a stability update. What makes things baffling is that this is a major milestone update of a new version number, yet it offers no new features or offer anything relevant. The last time we saw a firmware update that added new content was 5.50, which added a supersampling mode to PS4 Pro consoles. All regions can now download the 447 megabyte patch by going to the system update menu. Of course if you're looking for homebrew, then you might want to hang on and stay at the firmware you've already got.

For that Sony would have to do a huge investment like Microsoft did and would require game developers to be on board with it and recompile their code or provide Microsoft with the source. Aside that Microsoft has the PlayStation Now horse in the game, and it is against their interest to provide a free alternative when there is a popular subscription one.
The playstation now that I heard almost no one ever talk about ever since it came out despite sony promoting it like it's the main gimmick since playstation tv was announced... and later discontinued?

What part of this is popular? Ever since I known it to exist, i hear no one on this forum or anywhere else ever talk about it at all.

I'm just saying that it's not like it would hurt them to make the games they have on playstation now playable by just owning a retail disc of the ps3 game. Of course is nothing as good as the xbox one playing older games but I guess you are all right that sony wasn't planning anything. :ninja:

Didn't we already know 6.0 wasn't going to offer anything big though? Like, the beginning of August is when the Beta version went out to testers, it was well known that 6.0 was only designed to fix bugs and "improve performance".

The PS4 will never have physical backwards compatibility like the Xbox One. The best you can hope for is PS1 and PS2 classics, and that's it. The PS3's hardware is too unique to emulate on something as weak as the PS4.
Well we kinda have backwards compatibility if you count ps now

This is clearly an update month. WiiU got an update, Vita got an update, Switch got an update, and PS4 got and update.... I think XboxOne got an update, but I wouldn't know since mine hasn't powered on in 3 years

I hear some people talk about it, but it'd be maybe an interesting pool to make and see how popular it may actually be.

Either, Sony is Sony, it'll remove features from your console or cut down on how.many consoles you can own with the same account, if it thinks it'll milk the market some extra cash.

It took PS4 five years to get to 6.0, while the Switch is already there after a year and a half. In 5 years the Switch will be at 25.0

Well that says little, could be relative how they interpret semantic versioning or how they join newer features into the console. Though the Switch did came out with little functionality and seems to have much to increment.

Because secretly it says "5.55 exploit available soon, you can now play "backups" that contain update files up to 5.55"

Nah 6.0.0 messed with my save file decryption. I need to rework on this.

Xbox one doesn't have physical compatibility either. You just put in the disc and it detects the game and downloads it from the xbox store if it's on there.

As I recall, the XBox One was tested to see what it'd take to have XBox 360 games run on the system and they made sure to keep some texture formats in the GPU and some part of the audio engine to drastically reduce the system requirements for emulation. Without those changes, it sounds like that support would have been subpar at best and possibly non-existent for a lot of games. I presume Sony could have possibly did something similar with the PS4 (or their Pro version), but I've no idea how viable that would have actually been without substantial hardware inclusion.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".
