Do you have a link for me? I am not able to find such cheap ones.

shell was just a random listing, from some guy who had upgraded to some clear ones, so it's gone now, and I got the rail from a chinese listing and there's a ton of those in the £6-7 range.

edit : to be fair though, haven't received either bit yet, so too early to tell if I've been ebay'ed or not :)

anyone suggesting tin foil should automatically get leveled-down here on temp (LOL) just use the wire jig, everyone has a useless wire around the house
Stripping a old usb or ethernet cable should work yes? or is the wires inside too thin?

You can get a joycon rail cheap. Buy a rail, insert rail into switch, take a piece of wire and touch one end to fan heatsink then the other end to the pad that leads to pin 10 on the side of the rail then profit. That way you don't have to really mess with any of the pins.

Yep, or that, but I would go with your idea instead... soldering a magnetic switch or a physical button. I wouldn't want a full permanent short my self...

Everyone wanting a permanent solution I recommend what TheCyberQuake did:

Just use pin 10+7 or 10+1 instead of 10+9 for the best results.

I think this tutorial is better:

https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-another-magnetic-reed-switch-rcm-installation.505438/

You really want a solid conductor wire in your jig. (assuming you are talking about a jig). If you are opening up your joycon to solder then the ethernet wire is OK.

USB and SOME ethernet cables are stranded wire. Ethernet cables may have either solid or stranded conductors.

Yeah or that... But TheCyberQuake was the first to post... I never saw your tut, though my self I don't need a tut, I just need atmosphere so I can start messing with my Switch :).

But nice tut!
This is unlikely to happen anytime soon, and it's unlikely to ever happen on 3.0.2 or higher systems.
Actually is very likely to happen up to FW 4.1 if I remember well...

Kate said in the future up to 4.1 will have a softmod, now above it no one knows... Since she said is coming in the future I can only think that someone actually have an exploit up to 4.1 but just don't plan to release it very soon...

However everyone rushed everything and if TX is a lot successful most likely they will rush releasing the exploits...

And I think Kate and maybe others might even have something under their sleeve and are waiting for Maricko new Switch revision to show up to see if it still works on it, maybe we will get some crazy magic released a few time after the new revision shows up... Who knows...

heck even most DS flashcarts where too thick and bend the cartridge ports pins, so over time legit copies would stop working lol

I think this is why the Fail0verflow team used a micro-usb connector in their jig, to avoid unnecessary wear and tear on the switch's joycon pins.

phone wire that is used for a landline is good cuz it' 4 or 5 wire and it' solid smaaaaallll gauge wire.

NOOOOOOO This is wrong and TERRIBLE advice. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

That wire is way too thick. Phone wire is 22AWG and VERY stiff, you will rip the solder points right off using wire like that. use 30AWG wire (kynar, wire wrap, etc.) or stranded 28AWG or 26AWG.

I know I would ruin any PCB mods with solid phone wire, and I am an expert, imagine what would happen to a novice!

pin 9+10 has a "bad topic" now the jig has a "bad topic" cant wait to see reed switch bad topic, autorcm bad topic. and everything bad topic

everyone with a common sense should know the involving risk's when doing stuff it isnt designed for..

What a garbage, unproductive comment. Sure, there are risks. But just because we accept the risks doesn't mean we should just let our things break if we can prevent it. Maybe a jig can be designed that won't put such stress on the pins or there's some other solution that would avoid wearing down the pins as badly as paper clips.

Thank you! His comment made me CRAZY too!

Well there is a one time jigg method for auto rcm mode which will reduce the amount of time you use it anyway.

Personally I think the jigs are a very bad idea and people are likely to have pin connection problems with the joycon down the road as the pins are over stressed and the plating is damaged due to fretting and scratching by materials like steel (paper clip). The pins in the switch are likely beryllium copper, or phosphor bronze (both softish but springy) with a nickle followed by gold plating (hardish but still pretty soft). They aren't going to hold up super well over the medium term.

typical connector pin properties: https://blog.samtec.com/post/strength-in-design-variable-connector-material-options/

Fretting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fretting

info on mating dissimilar metals http://www.connector.com/gold-or-tin-versus-gold-and-tin/

Granted the above advice and information is related to REAL manufacturing, and REAL product reliability. I certainly don't know how long jigs of various types will REALLY last. I am certainly however that a paper clip approach is risky with respect to bending the pins, or pushing them beyond their ability to recovery their original location.

A lot of this is subjective, and based upon "my" experience which is likely more extensive than almost anyone in these forums (though I am sure there are other 20yr EEs on here and I'm not here to measure wiener length). So take the input as you will, and happy to have discussion as I am not a mechanical engineer or material scientist!

If anything people should use bent copper or tin plated copper wire bent into a little hump so that the jig wire is the weakest material rather than with the paper clip in which the switch pins will give out first.

I did the magnetic reed switch mod personally and it works great. I did it a little differently than some of the other people who used it (only slightly different). I'll post pictures and notes and part numbers at some point if people want it.
Once cfw supports sleep this is a non issue is it not?
