After reading this post I connected my WiiU to the internet and ran the online updater, but no dice so I downloaded directly from github. So far I can save state with no issue, but loading a save is still giving me the same screen.
Hmm weird, try deleting your Retroarch.cfg that can sometimes fix things.

Still nothing, unfortunately. It's good to know it should work though, since you got it working on your end. If nothing else, being able to save state again is an improvement.

Maybe I should try a different rom.

It could be a bad dump I suppose?
Yeah I honestly have no idea. I've never encountered a bug where a game will save normally but deny access to load those files, and all my other Retroarch PS1 games worked fine.

When you ran Alundra, did you use Version 1.0 or 1.1?

Edit: I originally installed Alundra with a patch as well but I've since deleted it and its save files, along with every other attempt at Alundra I've installed until I deleted the .cfg file. Do you think maybe that original patched version could be corrupting my save file?

My version is v1.0.
It's very possible the patch is messing with the save files somehow but if you've deleted all traces of it I cant see why it would be messing with the core now?
Try to run the game on the PC version of the pcsxrearmed core?

I only have retroarch on my wiiu and tbh I've been trying all day for something so I'm calling it quits at this point.

Thank you so much for all your help. It's because of you I can even rely on save states now to play Alundra.

One last suggestion, try a clean install of retroarch... rename your current retroarch folder on your sd card to retroarchold or something and extract the retroarch folder from the latest build on the buildbot to the root of the sd card..
https://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/nintendo/wiiu/2024-01-16_RetroArch.7z

If that works then there definitely still some remnants of the patch in your old retroarch folder?

I'll give this a shot in the future. Thanks!

Edit: So yeah even replacing all of Retroarch's files, I'm still getting the "there was a problem with the book" screen using 1.0 and 1.1. At this point, the only explanation is that the roms I've been using are to blame

Just so I'm clear; you ran Alundra 1.0 using PCSX_Rearmed on WiiU, right? Is the Unai core in your link different?

Sorry only now noticed your edits :P
Hmm yeah best to just redownload the game from another source and try again?

Yes Alundra v1 NTSC using the latest Core from the Retroarch Online updater.. The Unai build should have the same compat as the Online updater Version, but the Unai version will be faster, so really best to use Unai whenever possible ;)

A hint:
the unai version is better for 2d games as well as 3d, for example, the variable geo 1 and 2 ps1 game on the core pcsx rearmed, the sprites are a little cut, especially the special ones, but in the unai version it works perfect
and there is also the dance dance revolution 5th mix if you use the unai version the game will work perfectly activating downscaling and booting without the bios logo appearing.

However, you can alternate between the colors as each one is good at something.
