Thing is, Air Jordan's have always had a ton of hype and prestige behind them. They're the Apple products of shoes. Whereas here, aside from the Switch and Steam Deck, all the other products in that same pool are from literal nobodies with no prestige behind them at all. It's like people somehow legitimizing the brands that sell products exclusively at struggling dollar stores.
So DCs, Timberlands, Puma must be like Anbernic, Retroid Pocket, and powkiddy.

seems like a great final late xmas gift for me at ;east nintendo won't bother banning imports like they did with the doctor v64
I had surgery yesterday on my head and my ears. Good news, I can now here out of my ear’s although it’s not maximum, meaning I will be also getting hearing aids.

I will be getting one of these simply because it looks fun and way better than the Raspberry Pi 4 I’m currently using.

Prestige has to start somewhere though.

And it's not like GoRetroid is an obscure company or new to the game, this is their eight console and they've been around for years. Reviews and experiences with their previous consoles have been very positive. That gives them legitimacy. They're not mainstream, and the average grandma looking for a "gameboy" for little Timmy won't know of them, but the word you're looking for is "niche" and in that niche they're not unknown.
Here's a literal nobody for example, "500 retro games in one" console for $6, no name, no brand, no support, sold exclusively at struggling dollar stores (and Aliexpress, same thing really). I don't think the two can compare.

Didn't they launch the 3+ like last month or something? This is all happening too fast.

Will this one be able to run Switch games?
It came out a year back in November. It came few months right after the 3, which pissed everyone off since the difference in performance to the 3+ was staggering.

It's not happening too fast; it's to be expected from handheld emulation manufacturers at this point. I'm just playing the waiting game a bit longer, never really know.

We can get all these bootleg gaming devices but can't get a N64 Mini?
They can of course make one, but I guess trying to release one at an affordable price is where the problem comes in.
People arent going to want to pay more than $100 for it when you can buy one of these bootleg devices. And then you have to factor in the two controllers you have to bundle in with the N64 Mini.
I dunno how much room for profit that leaves.

You earn prestige over time and then you sell the Air Jordan. You don't start with the Air Jordan (you literally couldn't, he wasn't about to sign his name away to nobodies), stomp your feet and proclaim, "look how much street cred we have! Now buy our product!" And yes, these guys have made many of these devices, but they still lack such credibility. The average consumer will have never heard of these devices, but they will have heard of the Switch, and very possibly the Stream Deck.

One of these days I might get one of these, since they can already play up to switch and possibly more. I bet when a switch 2 emulator eventually comes out, these portables already have the power to play it. The only difficult part might be if the actual rumored dual screen or whatever it is, is part of the switch 2.

Yes, that's what "niche" means. The average consumer isn't looking for a retro emulation device and won't know the market. And saying "this company isn't as famous as Nintendo" isn't really an argument there.

I don't disagree that these are niche at all. I do however question how so many different kinds of these devices can continue to be produced at profits. Seems like a crash in this niche market should be imminent. Or, more simply, I wouldn't invest in any of these companies making these devices today unless their name is Nintendo or Valve, unless, you know, I wanted to just piss my investing money away.

The 3+ can run some Switch games.

So it's possible that the 4+ could run even some more demanding titles.

Ah. Wasn't aware of that. I mean I suppose it is a possibility then. I just wasn't expecting a 200$ handheld, the same price the Switch Lite is priced at, to be able to run Switch games. But I suppose that since the games shown in the demonstration are mostly games that are also on PC and not as graphically intense then there's some hope

Oh, we're not looking to invest into the company, we're just looking at the handhelds. And even if the market collapses tomorrow and the company folds, it won't affect the build quality or specs of the current device.

I know we're not looking to do that lol. I'm just speaking to how I don't understand how these nobody companies can afford to release so many of these devices, they certainly aren't all printing money.

  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
