Sealed copy of Pokemon Yellow graded A+ allegedly destroyed by US Customs

Stephen Kick, who runs under the username of @pripyatbeast, posted on Twitter an image of a received package after being handled by customs. The package was supposed to be an encased sealed copy of Pokemon Yellow, graded A+ with a score of 9.2 by Wata Games with an alleged worth of around $3'800 dollars, but instead, the owner got a broken acrylic case, with a mangled seal and sliced box of Pokemon Yellow.

The highest rated Pokemon Yellow game is also an A+, but with a score of 9.4, which is currently going up for around $10'500 dollars in price.
While the morality and legality of sealed copies of widely available games as Pokemon Yellow is highly questionable and up for debate, and regardless of its alleged worth, it's always heartbreaking to see something you ordering getting destroyed in shipping or customs.

While I think Wata and collectors (aiming to profit off of the arbitrary scarcity of games; maybe even use it as a front for money laundering) are doing a disservice to the community that enjoy video games, I do not think they deserve to reap karma from US customs in such (an alleged) way.

I think (allegedly) the person took a large risk in having something high value to be handled by the post service (or maybe they crossed the border?) without any safeguard to guarantee that they will receive what they wanted. I think this could be an expensive lesson, and probably more valuable than what they teach in college.

Allegedly.

People on this website need to chill out, honestly I restrain myself to even comment most of the time, but it's incredible how biased people are over there, some of you guys always take the worst take possible it's unreal. He do what he want with his money and he doesn't deserve to see the product he paid for destroyed by anyone only because "it's a dumb purchase". Grow up.
Been thinking about logging out anyway, the site more focusses on bringing news that gets attention/game release dates/leaks and avoiding the term "releases" than in the past with so many spam ads that the site is unusable on mobile imo.

Newer games have always had it. I can't remember if N64 games had.

Since GCN/DS (that I recall) were sealed.
Well the quote was "Nintendo has NEVER used that"
And I don't know if I have original GB or GBA boxes... I'm a packrat, but don't want to dig that deep into my pile of old stuff...

Those are special editions and non standard boxes

In the context (a run of the mill Game Boy game) i was, and am, perfectly right.
Words matter. That's not what you said. You are not right about what you said. Call it OCD ( I call it decades of marriage) but incorrect use of the word "never" gets under my skin.

And besides, GB games were pretty much always sealed with plastic (like saran wrap) in their entirety, and in other cases, even hard plastic boxes with the cardboard boxes inside.

I mean, if someone was going to smuggle drugs into the country, wouldn't this be the kind of thing they'd hide it in? Inside a product that is literally made to not be opened because it's a collectible?

At the same time, I always wondered on those TV shows that show them slicing open books and laptops and such at airports that have drugs in them, what happens if they're wrong and there aren't drugs in the item? Does the person get any compensation for their item being destroyed?

I think if he/she could afford to buy a collectable for over 10k, they'd be able to afford a plane ticket to go pick up the item in person...

This is a weird one. Like yeah, okay, it's stupid to spend that much cash on a sealed Gameboy game, but it's equally wild that U.S. customs can absolutely demolish something like that based on what was presumably vague suspicion.

It could have been used to store drugs.
