Ok so I've been offline for about a year now and i just tried to update because I thought it was safe and now when I turn on my 3ds all I get is a black screen. Shit!!!

u probably have an oudated luma. you're also probably using a9lh. update to b9s to get continued support.

Use this guide to update to B9S if you have A9LH: https://3ds.guide/a9lh-to-b9s It will also update Luma3DS and probably fix your issue
Can you still boot into the payloads? If you can, then you just need to update to B9S and the latest Luma3DS

there's probably a little selector/switch on the side of the sd card for write protection.
There should be a little slider on your SD card. Just move it all the way up. If it still doesn't work, move it down instead.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in making a topic asking about something you're unsure about. @Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.+1 -

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60
