Sony announces new PlayStation 5 model, offers detachable disc drive for digital consoles

dsadsadasd.png

As the rumors foretold, Sony has announced a slimmer PlayStation 5 console for this upcoming holiday season. Marketed as "the new PS5 model", this version of the system is 30% smaller than the original PS5, while weighing 18-24% less, with a 1TB internal SSD. It also has four side panels as opposed to the launch PS5's two, meaning the previous official cover plates will not fit. The new PS5 with a disc drive will retail for $499.99/549.99 EUR, while the Digital Edition will be priced slightly cheaper at $449.99/449.99 EUR. Those with a new Digital Edition console will also have the opportunity to upgrade to a detachable disc drive for their system, for an extra $79.99.

The new PS5 launches this November, and will be the default PlayStation 5 model going forward.

There’s barely any games on it and they already releasing a slim version like everything’s fine 😂😂

and it will still have no games!

Huh. Are you sure you fellas bought a legit PS5 and not the Soulja Boy 5? I think you were scammed because when I power mine on there are several hundreds of games available in the PS+ section alone, which doesn't even account for any of the other titles not available with PS+.

I honestly really like the attachable disc drive. Not surpised that it costs more to buy the drive seperate if you buy the digital console. It'll also be good in case the drive fails, you can just buy another instead of having to get a new console or get it repaired. Much better than MS, who according to leaked documents, appears to be ditching physical media altogether mid-gen.
You get it. I wonder if it can be used with existing consoles, if the internal drive fails?

It is really funny that the digital version plus disk drive is $30 more than the one that comes with a disk drive

Any chance at all you think a 3rd party could manufacture a cheaper one? If I had to guess would probably be completely locked down unfortunately
It'll probably use some sort of DRM. I'm pretty sure it's intended for people who got the digital version and then later decided they wanted to use physical media. I don't know how the PS5 is at DVD and Blu-Ray playback, but IMO the PS3 is still one of the best DVD/Blu-Ray players around (great DVD scaling and CC support over digital output/HDMI).

so they are releasing a digital only version with the ability to install a disk drive in and it costs more all together than just buying the disc version! no wonder jim is retiring his gone senile!
i mean, that's standard
you buy the bundle for the components sold more expensive separately
it's better than having the digital and wanting a disc one months down the line and having to fork out for a whole new console, y'know, you're not meant to buy the disc module and the console together

To be fair, exclusivity is dead. Not like you'll find more of it on Xbox, and Nintendo is always easy to emulate. It's unlikely consoles will ever measure up again when compared to PC, but they've had plenty of time to shine already.

on the bright side now that the drive is detachable they can be easier to tinker with
It wasn’t particularly difficult to tinker with for a very long time, they’ve always been quite modular. That being said, no married daughterboard nonsense and tool-less assembly is great for less technical users. All perishable media should work like this - drop-in replacement parts are great.

I didn't even consider that angle. Imagine how much nicer it would've been in past generations if you could simply hot swap failed disc drives.

Much as I despise the design of the PS5, now I wish I had bought it at launch, but at the same time I didn't want to pay half a grand for it.

Oh well, I'm good with PS2, PS3, PS4, Wii/GCN, Xbox 360, etc.

How to make a "slim" console in 2023 according to Sony:
1. get CAD model of existing console
2. apply resize tool
3. profit?

At least it's Blu-ray player-sized now instead of VCR-sized, I guess.

Meh, quite disappointed they couldn't setup the detachable disc drive for the "phat" digitals, would've been a nice side-grade for anyone looking to grab a disc model but not spend $500.

Oh well. Mostly curious to see the internals more than anything, see what kind of improvements they've made to the board or if they're going to basically reuse the 12xx SKU boards and just shrunk the outer casing/added that disc drive port.

Microsoft patented a while back a way to use an external disc drive to verify the a disc and download the digital version to be used on Series S. I hope this will boost that ideia do market.

Launch PS5 have liquid metal isolation problems in the CPU cooler.

I realise the PS5 has been a thing for years, but due to the chip shortage and scalping it still feels decently new - it feels a bit soon for a PS5 Slim.

Any chance of a PS5 Pro...?
I don’t think it was a scalping thing. It was a strategy from Sony to supply less to keep the consoles off the shelves for 2 years ;)

the fact that the PS5 launched 3 years ago is insane

the PS4 had a 7 year life cycle, which means we are almost half way through the PS5's cycle, and the PS6 may be slated for 2027
True as that is, it still doesn't feel like PS5 has truly taken off. 😅

I mean, there's no "must play" games yet.
