The Sega Dreamcast turns 20 years old in the west

Dreamcast-Console-Set.jpg

Exactly 20 years ago today, the SEGA Dreamcast launched on store shelves across North America. When it released, the Dreamcast was an impressive console for many reasons--it officially brought SEGA's flagship series, Sonic the Hedgehog, into 3D with its 9/9/99 launch title of Sonic Adventure. There were other standout titles as well, such as Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Skies of Arcadia and Soul Calibur. And even to this day, you can still feel the effects of some of the Dreamcast's best games, with the upcoming Shenmue 3 finally continuing the tale of the series, and even having the collector's edition reference its platform of origin, by coming in a Dreamcast-styled case. Phantasy Star Online 2, a sequel to the 2000-released RPG Phantasy Star Online, which started on the Dreamcast, is also getting a western release, sometime next year. Of course, the Dreamcast is also remembered for being SEGA's final foray into the hardware market, before they bowed out and became a third party software company. Regardless of the highs and lows, the Dreamcast is sure to be fondly remembered by many. What's your favorite memory of the SEGA Dreamcast?

I've said it once and I will say it again. Microsoft has no place in the console market, over priced hardware, no exclusives, game library is shared with PC. Sega could easily enter the hardware market again & knock Microsoft down even lower. Microsoft<Sega<Nintendo<Sony. Sega has a library of IP's to base new exclusive software on.

Microsoft can afford to lose money with their videogame consoles.

And at least Halo and Pyschonauts were great Xbox games.

I had a Sega Dreamcast when I was younger, it was one of my first consoles, but during an era where I was trying many new gaming experiences and trying to figure out which ones I liked best.
Something that stuck with me, though, was always Sega GT, Jet Set Radio, and Unreal Tournament. I've played so much of those three games, I've worn out my laser more than once..

I've still got the same Dreamcast I had years ago, today! If only I had more power sockets available, I'd keep it hooked up 24/7 :glare:

also bought the DC pretty late in life cycle, but had much fun. I will never forget the „toothpick“ hack for the PSU, or my prehestoric plastic steering wheel with a spring, before force feedback was a thing. And OFCOURSE the endless time battles in Daytona with a friend. Man he is still a bit pissed, if we mutually remember that my best time is still valid, after all that time and it was only like 2/100s better. maybe it wasnt the best idea to play daytona so intensive, instead to focus more on my diploma.

I spend a lot of time playing House of the Dead 2 on my neighbor house, good times. House of the Dead 2 was the only game that is nostalgic to me from Sega Dreamcast. : )
