Wouldn't having a zip in your pants increase the likelihood of unpleasant accidents? Most would opt to have a zip in their jeans, trousers or shorts.

Is this one of those British/American English things? Like chips VS crisps? I was not aware of this one.

Indeed it is, frequently the source of much amusement, though perhaps not as much as fanny pack or the vision of someone riding around in a (chicken) coop.
