Hey, GBAtemp community!

I'm certainly not the first to write a post about this. :ha:

I have a 2TB USB-powered hard drive from Western Digital. It came with a single NTFS partition, but after reading up a bit on WBFS vs. NTFS vs. FAT32, I decided to go with the latter for my Wii games. I used MiniTool Partition Wizard, as I've seen other people on this forum recommend, to create a 100GB FAT32 partition. I converted some ISOs to WBFS using Wii Backup Manager, and got the following file structure:

<root>/MarioKartWii [RMCP01]/RMCP01.wbfs
<root>/SUPER MARIO GALAXY [RMGP01]/RMGP01.wbfs
<root>/SUPER MARIO GALAXY MORE [SB4E01]/SB4E01.wbfs

And here's the issue. Although USB Loader GX recognizes and loads the hard drive, I can't see any of the games. It shows "92.64GB of 99.95GB free" on the bottom of the screen, detects both partitions in the "Game/Install Partition" setting [FAT32 (100.00GB)/NTFS (1862.98GB)] and even shows the folder structure in both partitions when I go to Custom Paths and choose USB1:/ and USB2;/, respectively. I have tried both USB ports, checked to make sure "Wii Games" were being displayed, messed with some settings in Hard Drive Settings, and yet the only "games" listed are the Wii Channels I have installed. And no, I'm not using a flash drive (heheh).

Where could the problem be? I know my hard drive could be plain incompatible, but I wanted to eliminate other possibilities before having to buy another one.
  • Could the hard drive load, yet be incompatible, or does loading and displaying the folders at least tell me it's not incompatible? (basically, is loading in any way related to compatibility at all?)
  • Should I try using another loader other than USB Loader GX?
  • Could it be something wrong with my folder structure?
  • And finally, could the fact that the HDD is self-powered interfere in anything? I've seen people using self-powered ("portable") 2.5" hard drives successfully, but since mine is 2TB I'm not too certain the power supply on the Wii is enough. I could get a Y-cable for external power supply, but I wouldn't even bother grabbing one if there's a high chance my hard drive is just not well-suited. Is it worth trying?
Also here's a syscheck in case it's helpful.

hello,

your problem is simple: you used WiiBackupManager to convert the ISO to wbfs.
this program should not be used as a converter, but as an installer!

as a result, you converted the games (good) but then you copied them to the wrong place on your HDD !
the program knows where to put the game, let it do it automatically. User action is prone to error, and as a result lot of users don't put the files where they should be.

Here is the proper way to use the program : https://gbatemp.net/posts/7592791

hint :
Wii game's folders don't go in <root>, but in <root>/wbfs/
Gamecube games folders go into <root>/games/

And finally, could the fact that the HDD is self-powered interfere in anything?
no problem if you are on Wii.
if you where on WiiU, you'd require a Y-cable for additional power source.

Your syscheck is good. if you want a better setup, go into USBLoaderGX settings > loader settings > Loader's IOS, and game's IOS : change 249 to 250
it will have the effect of using slot 250 for your games, which contains "base57". some games don't work with base56 and require base57.
that's all :)

your problem was only a path layout issue.

Funny enough, I followed the softmodding tutorials SO strictly, only to use Wii Backup Manager by myself in the end, thinking it couldn't be more straight-forward! xD

Thank you for your help :)
