PS1/2 Winhiip failing to read hdd 250+games lost?

hello, been working on a ps2 hdd for a while, was at around 250 games and now all of a sudden the drive isn't read properly, it gets to sector $09A00000 and gives the "There is a problem with reading the hard drive" message.
I tried the drive in the PS2 and most of the games have disappeared, just a few left.
Tried to scan/repair the drive in winhiip and that too fails with message "There has been a problem reading from the selected hard drive".
Also tried a different cable & enclosure (1tb 2.5 sata) all with the same fault.

Am I doomed, have i wasted many many hours on this?

Tried with HDLGameInstaller/hdl-dumb (for backing up your backups)?

Though if the partition chain is corrupted, there isn't too much to do, at least without hefty manual editing and knowledge of all partition offsets and sizes...
