God damnit, I just snapped my SD card in half...

Going to screw down my Pi 3B into the Retroflag SNES case, I forgot about the SD card, and I heard that all-familiar "snap" after screwing the board down... Hours of setup wasted, my config.txt file not backed up either... FUCK MY LIFE!

Update: I am a goddamn idiot, there was a small piece of paper I purposely set aside in the box that I didn't read...

I replaced the backplate on my switch and heard the same noise, 400gb sd card gone

This was 2018 when they weren't as cheap :(

That happened to me, and also with a 16gb card! This was about 11 or 12 years ago or so, and then it was 'expensive' to replaced ($60 maybe) compared to how cheap 16gb cards are these days!

Aw man! Is it completely in half? Could it not be read at all by a pc in order to salvage your config? I'd try a bit of vinyl tape and popping it in a card reader to see.

I always worry about that happening to me, as most cases are designed so the MicroSD card can only be inserted after assembling. It hasn't happened yet, but it nearly happened once or twice.
At least it was a cheapo one.

The card was toast, the Pi wouldn't see it. I started over, but got all my progress back. I also updated the first post. I'm such an idiot. ^^;

I snatch up cheap and fast 16GB and 32GB SD cards for Pis, or 64GB Nano-sized USB sticks for the Pis I run for long-term services, like my MediCat Seedbox. There's even an OMV 5 plugin where I can share files off the root drive (The 64GB USB, for example) if I run out of space on the 240GB SSD, but that just screams "security risk" to me.

    I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
