Pokemon Go is still a poorly implemented, buggy mess

Just a quick opinion piece. I don't think it's me that doesn't like the game as much as it's the game that doesn't like me. I'm shocked at how terribly they implemented most of the features this game has. It's absolutely a winning concept and personally I thought it would be hard to mess up.

Let's start with the launch. First of all, it was released in different regions on different days with no indication of when specific places would be able to download the app, leading a lot of people to download the APK and end up banned. That was the first major problem. Secondly, the server was absolutely horrible. I could not log in to the game for 4 days after release and even then Trainer Club accounts were still disabled. It was extremely frustrating and possibly the worst game launch in recent history.

But forget about the launch, Pokemon mobile game hype!!! Right??

I consider myself a big Pokemon fan, which may be part of the reason I'm disappointed. Let's go over some of the basic flaws of the game:

  • The game is extremely boring and near impossible to play without spending on Pokeballs unless you live in an area with a lot of Pokestops;
  • Egg hatching is broken and only counts about a third of the distance you actually walk, requiring you to keep your phone screen on the whole time;
  • Most of the pokemon available to catch are garbage, especially in suburban or rural areas, and to progress you just have to catch the same stuff over and over and over again;
  • The GPS feature is much worse than an app like Google Maps, it's extremely insensitive or overly sensitive depending on some unknown variable which changes on the day to day;
  • It's extremely easy to hack the game, allowing people to dominate the gyms through cheating;
  • Speaking of the gyms, the battle system makes absolutely no sense, but it's not like you have a chance unless you devote all your time and energy to PoGo;
  • The footprint feature has been broken for weeks, and has since been completely removed. Not that it was helpful to begin with;
  • Overall, the app is horribly unoptimized, it drains 2% battery per minute on my phone which sucks about half my battery away for a casual play session;
  • It's too competitive, and much more so than it is a casual, fun experience, since all the focus seems to be on leveling up and CP.

TL;DR: Unless you live in a big city it's hard to get the experience intended due to the game's lack of optimization and its overly-competitive nature.

Now I'm not just a whiner. I have an idea to fix most of the problems involved:

  • Upgrade the servers to something more reliable, considering how much revenue the game is generating I'm sure it's within Niantic's reach;
  • Crack down on cheaters;
  • Fix the battery drain and GPS issues;
  • Add more pokemon and pokestops in rural areas, because right now, 50% of the playerbase is not getting anything near the intended experience.

And the big one:
  • Every few months, have the "season" reset. Delete everyone's pokemon, but store their Pokedex progress in a national dex which is tied to the account.
  • Each season, declare the winning team at the end, so there can be actual, non-arbitrary competition between them;
  • At the beginning of each new season, swap out the pokemon for the next region; for example, next season would be Johto, the next would be Hoenn, and so on.

Not only would this give casual players a chance at the gyms, it would amplify the teams system and add a focus on collecting pokemon. It seems like a completely reasonable system that would help freshen up the experience every once in a while, otherwise people are just going to quit.

And that's it.

I largely agree on the issues of location. As a person who lives in a smallish town it really is kinda upsetting that i dont have the access to the same things in the app that big city players have.

Also i prefer the main gameplay much more then GO mainly for the reasons you state and also i dont have much time to play on my phone so when i do why waste it with server issues?

Until they either drastically change the app or release a new pokemon game, an emulator running Emerald will be my preferred "on the GO" Pokemon fix.

As someone who's played the game in two towns that are part of huge cities, (Portland, Houston) I obviously haven't experienced your first and fourth issues you have. That said, I've had an absolute blast with the game, living where I do.

The egg hatching part is absolute BS, that I can agree fully with. It's such a pain to have the game constantly open, they need alerts or something when a Pokemon or Pokespot appear, so then you can take your phone out.

Catching the same few Pidgeys over and over was fairly boring, but at the same time, it brings out that additive F2P notion that there's potential to catch something rare. And after 10 Pidgeys, you usually do get something cool. Honestly, this game just wants you to get out and spend your summer vacation walking around...which works perfectly...if you don't have a job!

Competition is what fuels addictive players, so the game did pretty darn well on that front, but I fully agree with your remaining bullet points. Pretty well written blog post, and it's nice to see your ideas fully explained.

Also, I think Niantic was looking into adding more Pokespots, or they were at least taking suggestions.

I live in a small village and indeed it sucks.

2 Pokéstops, one Gym, for the whole area that is large for KMs, and I get little to no Pokémon while I explore the place. This is very sad considering I walk everyday to go at work or to do errands.

I'm in the same position as VinsCool but for some reason semi-rare Pokemon seem to like my town

The second Pokemon I ever caught was a Wartortle

To start out with, the original 151 were perfect. It's the set of Pokemon that people know the best. It was smart to only have those, because what if the game flopped? All that time and effort into programming 600 other overwhelming Pokemon? But since the game is a runaway success, now they know they have more than capable enough to add in the rest from later gens.

My concern is why nintendo or gamefreak helpout don't help niantic make the game less buggy. Bunch of fucking cheapass companies. Also, I like to cheat by making the bot and the game work for me. So go whine and be salty some more. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )

I can't even play it because it crashes every couple minutes when I try to run it on my phone with nothing else in the background.

There was no attention to anything at home when playing games.>Now no attention in Public Places by using games.
Technology has developed too too much.
What if anyone without attention to the public enters the road with busy traffic.

I am just a 200.
I know that youngs and even most adults like this game.But just don't think about the game and think of society or world. .My friend told me that he read in a newspaper that a man just got slammed under a truck while he was playing pokemon.I did't check it out.Leave this discussion with this Totalsanity4

I'm a huge pokemon fan. i've tried the game out a tiny bit. i keep up with news about it. i just don't get the appeal of it. all you can do is capture pokemon and take over gyms. where is the fun? i think it's just purely the social aspect that's appealing to people. and i'm anti social so i dont really go for that kind of thing.

edit: oh and niantic seems like a really incompetent company. they fucked up the launch, they're not communicating at all, and they're actively making the game worse.

Well I mean how many people have been slammed under trucks for having their attention divided by literally anything else? The problem here isn't the app, it's people who don't pay attention to what they're doing and the media latching onto a new "sensation" and making mountains out of molehills with it
