The rumour mill continues around the successor to the Switch, but is this one the one? According to Video Games Chronicle, and corroborated by Eurogamer, Nintendo is likely to release its next-gen hardware in the second half of 2024. VGC's sources, which include "multiple people with knowledge of Nintendo's next-gen console plans", claim that the device will be useable in handheld mode and support physical cartridges like the Switch. However, backwards compatibility remains unclear.

The next-gen hardware will also apparently sport an LCD display, instead of an OLED one, in order to keep costs low while packing higher storage for higher fidelity games. Dev kits of the system are also with key partners, according to the report.

Of course, take this report with a grain of salt as these are unofficial news and rumours around a Switch Pro or Switch 2 have been around for a while. But eventually, we will get a successor to the Switch in one form or another; and whether it will replicate the latter's success remains to be seen.

Most probably price. The recent IPS models are good enough, see those gameboy screen replacements and those chinese handhelds with awesome looking screens, yeah LCD can still evolve. I think a lower price is more important than an OLED screen so the device can sell. Nintendo still remembers the horrors of the 3DS where the device is priced too high that it initially flopped so hard.

Nintendo would have to be out of their fucking minds to not include backwards compatibility. Ultimate may very well be the last Smash Bros game, and MK8 still has a very active online player base.

I strongly believe that next gen would be BC with Switch games, especially if they still use latest version of Tegra.

3DS is BC with DS and Wii U is BC with Wii.

I agree with the BC man. To this day, I'm still waiting for an updated system from Nintendo that can "potentially" play SMTV so I can continue my NG+.

It's gonna be like a decade before anyone decides they're ready to step in to Sakurai's shoes, if anyone ever does. I could definitely see Nintendo trying to make people buy the same game again, though.

note that the issue was mainly sony presenting its to be released console at that time, either matching or going under the 3ds price, while conveniently not mentioning you'd need at least a 100$+ proprietary memory card to save your games.

nintendo often gets bum deals when it comes to releasing new hardware, wether thats sonys price scam or devs and consumers literally just waiting 18 months or so for the other two to release their hardware, leaving the nintendo product high and dry (and after 18 months, of course its already a commercial failure, where devs dont want to dev for it if they can prevent it)

well it has to be portable and has to have like 3 hour battery so you cant put that much power on it unless you want a very very heavy battery and handheld.

You want PS5 level buy a gaming laptop.
PS4 level has already been exceeded by the many gaming handheld. What you will get from Nintendo is running Switch games better. If they don't have 100% compatibility then shame on Nintendo.

I think we can count on faster load time and no slow down where the current Switch struggle to maintain frame rate.

A good try would be something that is close to OLED Switch in price. Whatever they can squeeze into that pricing model and still make it a better Switch than the OLED model and it will have a chance to take up a large chunk of the Switch market.

Don't think too much about next gen and you live a happier Nintendo life. There is enough to be happy already.
