Nintendo Switch gamestream app "Rainway" shows off new video, beta delayed to 2018

rainway-feature.jpg

Rainway, an app for the Nintendo Switch that was shown off back in June, appears to have had its beta moved from "late November" to January 20th. Rainway is a game streaming application that can allow games to be streamed from your PC to your Nintendo Switch at 60fps, much like Steam's in-home streaming function. The developer, Andrew Sampson claims that he is currently in talks with Nintendo to bring the app to the Switch platform, though there's no news on if that's moving along or not. To apologize for the delay, he's uploaded a video of Microsoft exclusive Cuphead being streamed, with local coop no less, to a Nintendo Switch. As of November 25th, native apps for iOS, Android, and Xbox One were planned for release, though there's no new information on that front either.

Incredible work, but I can't help but notice a bit of a drop in the frame rate for the game. I guess it's to be expected from any streaming app, and is largely dependent on how good your internet is, but it seems like Cuphead, a game largely based on precise timing, might not have been the best example for this app.

Could be a cool idea to use the Switch as a secondary screen, if it's possible to just straight up screen capture XD

It's possible the dev in the video is using a potato slow router which might cause the lag, but if not then that doesn't look too promising IMO. If you don't have at least a decent AC router with a good signal, you're not gonna enjoy a lag-free experience regardless. Doesn't help that the Switch's wireless chip is garbage at best.

Still a neat idea, though I know I'll never use it at all myself. Used to use my Shield Portable for in-home streaming and that worked well, but for the most part I'd rather just sit in my office and play PC games than deal with an occasionally laggy stream a room or two away.

No? It's reminiscent of the steam link. You have your PC in one room, and your switch/link in another.

TBF, most people probably have their Switch dock in a living room or a bedroom, someplace their PC might not be. I'm not gonna lug my 50+lb gaming desktop from my office to my living room every time I want to play XYZ on a big screen TV.

EDIT: kinda 'd

Because Nintendo has extremely strict regulations on what they allow on the eShop, and an app that allows people to stream games that are not on the Switch would probably be one of those things they don't want to support.

Rainway also uses the web browser to stream things, so even if Nintendo didn't officially support it, you could use the browser (if Nintendo ever bothers allowing end-users to actually use theirs) to stream games as well.

Well if you bring your Switch including dock to a friend's place while leaving your PC at home, connected to the internet, and on, then i can certainly see some legit uses for that

    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.

the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
