Good day, people of GBATemp.

I bought my third Wii just recently. Got it pretty cheap, only 60$ for the console, three remotes, two nunchuks and the Skylanders Swap Force set.

What I want to ask is: what is your experience with the Wii2HDMI adapter? I know most of you will say that I should get a component cable, but my LED HDTV is a few years old and does not have a component input (I was furious when I saw it didn't have one), only a composite, SCART and two HDMI inputs. So component is out of the question. I already ordered a cheap Wii2HDMI on Wish a few days ago.

Now, I don't expect wonders, but will it be at least slightly better or less blurry?
Did you experience any other problems with the sound, picture etc.?

Any help is appreciated.

I see little difference between the Wii2HDMI converters and the composite cords. There is definitely a degradation of picture quality during the conversion process that leaves you with a washed-out image. In my blind experiments, here's what I've found:
  1. Component and vWii on HDMI are the best, and it's hard to tell them apart.
  2. Composite and Wii2HDMI are the worst, and it's hard to tell them apart. However, if the picture has a lot of dark colors, I can consistently pick out the Wii2HDMI image as worse than the composite image.
I honestly think it's the placebo effect when people say the Wii2HDMI image is great. It objectively loses some quality in the conversion process.

There are comparison videos showing the hdmi adapter to give a better image then the vwi. It also does with me, maybe it is your tv or you are using a cheaply made clone of the more expensive adapter.
In this video you can clearly see there are more colors when using the wii and it being more washed out on the vwii

My personal test was Xenoblade Chronicles, specifically the text which is very unreadable for me most the time. The Wii2HDMI I bought helped a lot in that regard. Except in that very narrow scope, *shrug*. Most developers designed within the scope of the expected hardware so it shouldn't really matter.

I only have one since my mom's tv has only one component cable input and it is used for the cable box. So having that just helped make the wii have a input slot. In my room, I just use my wii u. Either way, I don't notice much difference. Guess I'm not best to ask, I wear glasses or have untrained eyes, or don't really put much effort into finding the best visual experience others here do... with the IPS TN screens and such.

Probably a silly question, I have a cheap LED HDTV and it has the same connections (except also VGA), on my own set it can output component over VGA, any chance yours is similar?

Yeah, forgot to mention it also has a VGA port. Would component really be possible over VGA?

Hmm, seems there are some different opinions. I'll try it since I already ordered it.
Would I at least be able to use 480p? Currently I can use only up to 480i.

Honestly, I don't really care much about the graphics or upscaling in that matter, but composite is blurry as hell on my TV so I just wondered if it will help, even if a tiny bit.

I've not actually used it yet, I just know that it has the option.

I've not used it cos I'd need to buy an adapter, but the manual for my tv lists it. It does give you another option anyway.

That's nonstandard, like the "VGA to S/Video and composite" adapters that used to come with Matrox graphics cards - but if the implementation of VGA is "5 ADCs and the rest is all software" adding that as a bonus feature is free (for the manufacturer, at least!)

S/video is black and white composite (intensity + sync) + color difference
Component is black and white composite (intensity + sync) + red difference + blue difference (green can be subtracted from the other 2)
Scart RGB is ideally sync (in practice full composite video) + R + G + B + transparency (from the days of external teletext/subtitle receivers) + input selection
VGA RGB is R + G + B + horizontal sync + vertical sync + gimmicks
However big the differences may appear to be, these conversions are relatively simple and there are (were? at least at standard TV resolutions) mass manufactured chips for the purpose

Remember, this is an adapter, not an upscaler. I notice that composite is a bit sharper.

If you do use Wii2HDMI you can enable EDTV and enable progressive scan on all Gamecube games that support it. So, no, composite shouldn't be a bit sharper. Regardless, you're limited to 480p without upscaling and upscaling is overrated, IMHO. So, short of questions about adapter quality, it would seem the best choice is whatever connections you've already got in your setup. For me, I've got nothing else that's component and no component hook-ups.

Comparison videos in this situation are flawed for technical reasons I don't want to get into right now. We also used multiple Wii2HDMI dongles in our tests.

Just saying my adapter works just fine and it's not chinese or whatever.

There is only one person I have ever seen telling HDMI is worse than composite.
Technically, the converters just extract simple RGB signals from the component source (see Rycarrdo's explanation) and chips are being mass produced these days. There maybe a little bit of conversion losses but shouldn't affect much.
I have a cheap Chinese adapter and I never go back even to component for the sake of convenience (not for quality which I can tell there is a little bit of differences but not much). I even hack the adapter with volume control so I won't be startled when switching between Wii and normal TV program.

So judge with your own eyes and tell us what you think.

@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though

    I appreciate the insight!

@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
