GameStop reverses decision to remain open, switches to a “delivery at the door” service

gamestop.jpg

Following the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, most stores and services halted their operations, except for essential services. GameStop, the video game retail store, deemed itself as essential retail and decided to remain open. However, it seems like this is about to change as a letter from the CEO, George Sherman, addressed to employees, and obtained by Kotaku, points out.

As of March 22nd, all of its US-based stores will temporarily close access to the public and transition to a “delivery at the door” service for those stores that still operate. Customers will be able to place orders from the GameStop app or by scanning QR codes at the door of stores. Their purchases can then be picked up curbside at the door of retail stores, after coordinating with the in-store team.

The company's CEO also wrote that eligible employees will be given 80 hours of extra paid time off, while those who aren't eligible will be offered two extra weeks of pay. Sherman also stressed that the company won't force employees to turn up for work if they don't feel comfortable doing so and that they should coordinate with their supervisors on this matter. “We respect that everyone has personal situations and preferences, so your decision will not impact your position with the company,” he added.

You can read the letter in its entirety in the source link below.

We need physical, used games to stay around, anyone trashing a psysical media company selling used games needs a smack. Glad they're still serving (I'm in UK so it's only the principle that is of value).
Used south park I can borrow to a friend when I'm done =£10
digital south park I'm stuck with and can't resell or lend to a friend = £50
Derrrp I'll just buy digital and support the dev derrrrrp. You do the math

Yes, because physical games are totally worth endangering/exposing employees to a virulent disease /s

Maybe wait till this passes before keeping stores open?

Well, now that they got the moolah for Doom and AC's releases, there's not much reason for them to still stay open, as it would be just a waste of money for them to do so.
Am I right? :creep:

You guys really think people losing their jobs massively is not endangering them, in a country that has no safety net?

Unless you can magically find a replacement job for all these people, there is nothing good to gain from having Gamestop bite the dust in the end.

It's easy to pretend to care for the employees, but boycotting / "cancelling" a whole company is going to hurt them too. The virus will cause many causalities indirectly as well.

Besides all the crisis actors and conceiled trucks with empty coffins in Italy, I just haven't got one single proof that the Coronavirus has killed the people they say it has. Now China has 0 cases of the virus? Bullshit. I have seen the videos of Chinese people been dragged out of their apartments screaming: "I don't have temperature, I am not sick". Then they were taken to hospitals to forcefully being contaminated with the virus (this on february, join the threads).

I have seen 0% proof of anyone in Italy dying of the Virus, even though there are supposed to be thousands, just the media screaming about it.
I live in Chile and all the communists are demanding the president to lock people down in their houses by force, I don't know but this seems suspiciuos, and it is obviously horrible they are demanding that. The same people that were burning my country and destroying it to pieces since october of last year.
There are dark forces moving in this world, and the media is part of it. The mass manipulation is all time high.

Okay, we'll just let the employees be exposed to customers who don't cover their coughs and get their germs all over the counters, games and other products. Gotcha. I'm sure their immune systems will
magically fight off the virus and build antibodies.

If I didn't know any better, I'd have thought you were being serious.

No they can pass the game through a hatch nice n easy. Or maybe we should pay 3 times the price and have nothing to show for it.

Maybe you can I don't know, that was just the last game I did the digital Vs physical price test with. Most games are the same, I could go n get the latest call of duty used for far less than digitally....and that makes no sense since there is no printing n all that required.

GameStop's Pennsylvania business license had been suspended indefinitely by the governor. This was probably what ultimately persuaded them to close.

I learned that one the hard way, when I went to Gamestop to try and return an item, and found the shutters down and that sign up. :P I hope I can still get a full refund after my 7 days are up, as I have no way to return an online order.

That wasn't my point at all. My point is that not everything is black and white and each action have consequences. It matters to try and figure which one will be the least impactful because no matter what, there is no ideal answer to this crisis.

I'll go as far as to say a lot of people here seem happier to potentially bury Gamestop to the ground than actually showing concern for its workers. It says a lot about the world we live in.

Show me the de

I am not trolling. Show me the deads, show me the papers, show me the videos of people literally dying of this. All I have seen is trucks completely concealed carrying the supposed dead people.

I will believe only when seeing with my own eyes, check the virus myself on a microscope, and checking if the tools these people are using, actually don't give false positives (that might be dying of flu or other viruses). It would not be the first time the media spread lies throughout the world.

Be the sheep all you want, I can "believe" in other worldly things, like God and stuff, but IN THIS PHYSICAL WORLD I will not "believe" in what I am told like an idiot without real proof.

first they decide to keep workers up during a global pandemic because "WeRE ESsenTIAL", then exploit the situation to sell copies of games early, and now they're copying amazon. Covid-19 must be gamestop's favorite time of year.
Just quit gamestop, you've had a good run, but amazon and ebay already proved we don't need you anymore.
