Are Mega Drive/ Genesis 1 parts interchangeable?

I have recently come across the shell to a japanese model Mega Drive, its completely gutted. I'm wondering if I can repurpose it with the insides of one of my spare Genesis model 1's and have it function the same as a regular genesis. If not I have a defunct model 1 I can atleast make it into a display piece instead of a shell with no visible ports. I would just check myself but a lot of my retro game stuff is currently in storage -_-

I'm sure I could modify the back if need be... but I might glue some ports into the front of it and just use it for display
