Bandai Namco confirms Dark Souls servers are coming back, Dark Souls III will be restored first

Back in January, a dangerous exploit was discovered in the Dark Souls games on PC. The servers for all four games (Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III) were taken down shortly after, and for the last four months publisher Bandai Namco and developer FromSoftware haven't given updates on whether they'd be coming back. That changed today when PC Gamer managed to get a response directly from FromSoftware, confirming they were working to solve the problem.

"We are currently in the process of restoring the online servers for the Dark Souls series on PC," FromSoftware said in an email sent to PC Gamer. "We plan to restore online service for each game progressively, bringing back servers for Dark Souls 3 once we complete the necessary work to correct the problem. We will provide additional updates as soon as the restoration schedule is finalized. We want to thank all our players for your patience and understanding as we work to fix this issue."

While the update doesn't give any indication when the servers for Dark Souls III will be back up, or how long the wait will be until the entire series has its servers restored, it's finally nice to have some confirmation that this critical element of the game will be restored on PC soon.

Neat. Doubt I'll revisit any of the Dark Souls games any time soon, but that's because I've already played through each of them multiple times, also I've still got a couple more runs of Elden Ring to complete.

While there's still no date for when they're back up, it is nice to get an official confirmation that they are coming back. There was a part of me a bit worried that the PTDE servers might not get brought back.

That still might be the case sadly. Will have to watch what they do with DS2, whether they only bring SOTFS back online or not.

You're not wrong, the wording's still a bit vague on it. I distantly remember something about the server architecture for DS1,2, and 3 being shared, and it was the old DeS servers that were a separate system, but that's all hearsay from years ago.

I'll be sad if they don't bring back PTDE, I've got a lot of memories with it, but I also kind of get it. It's been a decade and not that many people still play it, but it's a different world without all the messages and bloodstains. I'd at least be happy if I could get one last co-op playthrough on it before they shut it down.

If it does, one can hope that some code wizard out there can make a private server for it.

Why were the servers off to begin with? That can't be good for sales...
A remote code execution exploit had been discovered a month or two prior to Elden Ring's launch. Not a lot of reason for them to care at this point about Dark Souls trilogy sales for one specific platform, so it's nice that they're bringing the servers back online anyway.

They were taken down because an exploit was found in all the Souls game servers that allows remote code execution on PC. They took the servers offline so they could fix it, they just didn't start working on it until after Elden Ring launched (since, obviously, they were busy with that).

EDIT:

Nice to see they're finally getting around to it though.
