Honeylab over at Honeylab's blog has discovered that you can add CD-ROM drivers to the default PSClassc kernel, and with an IDE to USB converter and a CD-Rom drive, you can essentially load roms from the disc's file system :)

I Use USB-IDE converter and 5-inch CD-ROM drive.

1. Stock kernel is not include scsi/cdrom driver.
There are drivers for CD-ROM on Playstation Classic default kernel.

Dropbox - cdrom.tar.gz

2.Extract them and copy to working USB or any.

3. on console...

> insmod cdrom.ko
> insmod sg.ko
> insmod sr_mod.ko

4.Plug USB-IDE-CDROM drive to PSC

If insmod succeeded , /dev/sr0 will appear.

5.Mount filesystem

> mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /tmp/cdrom/

Source: HERE

Not particularly useful, but cool nonetheless!

Ohh, retail PS1 games on PS classic!?
That would be very neat!
Indeed. But it depends on the emulator. Does it accept discs like e.g. dolphin supports DVD backups? Maybe selecting /dev/sr0 as ROM?

That sound plausible. If it can use images/ROMs from USB mass storage devices, why not from discs once a driver is loaded?

It’s for storage not loading legit game discs. But that could definitely happen too I suppose :)

Yeah, I understood this. Just pondering... from the emulators point of view, is there a difference between an ISO file on any storage medium and the "file"
/dev/sr0
when a retail disc is inserted? Loading images from CD/DVD is kind of pointless but using the old legit discs would be really nostalgic.

But it does not really matter. If the PlayStation Classic becomes a general purpose computer executing arbitrary Linux software, I would be interested in getting it. Thanks for sharing this progress.

I think it’s just a POC for storage, however I wouldn’t think it will take long before a retail disc reader mod is devised as a fork POC.

That would be cool :)

If I could load my actual PS1 CD based games on a PS Classic, I would be all over this! I own a few different PSX consoles, but with limited space in my house, and no HDMI converter (I do have a CRT but it's on its way out) this would be insanely convenient for me
