OT: SotN "easy mode" guide (= get access to good items early.. ;) )

As I just played through it, I took a few minutes and dumped the info in my head.

Written as spoiler free as possible. :)

Castlevania SotN "easy mode" (without using glitches, or the shield rod combo (because it ruins boss fights :) )):

Optional: When starting the game, there is a mechanic, you can use (beat Dracula in sub 1:00 minute) to start the game with increased stats. Probably the hardest thing you'd accomplish in following this guide. Use google, watch youtube videos. If you want to do this. You dont have to. :)

When starting as Alucard, in the merman area, farm the endlessly spawning mermen for as long as you can (until the XP gain / level ratio make it not worth anymore), you still have your best equipment as Alucard at this point, so take advantage of it. :)

Continue the game "normally". :)

The next thing to take notice of is another area near the start, namely the one where you jump/climb a long vertical, while the poison thingies that go around on a rail, try to poison you. In this vertical there is a door on the left, that leads to a white glowing door you cant open yet. But. :) The third torch on the left, once you enter - holds a 50$ sack of money though - that can be farmed in a couple of seconds, by jumping/entering the area and then exiting to the right again.

Farm about 16.000 gold that way. ;) (You can do less. :) )

Continue the game "normally". :)

Once you enter the library area, take note, that you can buy the "best" (+/- 2 damage points, which don't matter much) equipment for the first "half" of the game, right off the librarian you will encounter there. Buy the best mail, and the best sword available at that point (that is where your 16.000 gold goes into :) ). You can also buy two medals off of him for slightly increased stats. Probably buy the best shield he has as well. ;) Its actually not expensive.

This has you pretty much set for the first more than half of the game. (Most enemies will only hit you for 1 dmg.)
--

Once you enter the second "half" of the game (The transition is somewhat noticable - you cant miss it. Well - that is if you ever find out, that there is a second "half" of the game.. ;) ) -

The Alucard (with a d : ) ) mail, the Dragon helm and the Twilight cloak are pretty near by - get those. :) Also - don't refrain from using the "mist" form whenever you like - to fly through areas without getting damaged. Especially in the medusa head filled new clock tower.

Also at any point (after entering the second half) of your liking use a Library card to get back to the librarian, because he has restocked. Buy the new best sword and two gauntlets (ATK+5 x2) and equip them. Those items and level 40+ should be enough to finish the game (beat the end boss) at this stage. (Before that you'll swap the sword you bought for Alucards Sword - which you'll find through natural game progression - or not.. ;) ) But he will be a challenge.

Should you need a bit more help - get the fairy familiar (google), and also buy a few high potions off the librarian (20k gold investment or so.. ;)). That should be enough to easily beat the final boss.

It has to be said, that at this point, you've had access to the best money farming spot in the game for quite a while - so watch a youtube video - and you'll get the funds in no time. :)

I suggest, that you get Alucards sword and beat the game at this stage - to leave some of a "challenge" to it still. :) All the bosses that drop part of the item sets to access the end boss, are actually not that far away from the entrance to the second half, and also not hard at all.
--

If you want to continue - the next items to get would be Alucards shield (quite easy to get to) - and Crissaegrim - which "somewhat" ruins the game, because it makes it very easy from now on. You can get Crissaegrim as soon as you reach the new library area in fact - but I'd not recommend you to until you've beaten the final boss at least once without it. :) Its that cheesy of a weapon. :) But then its also the best tool to have to explore the entire rest of the castle - so at some point, probably get it. :) Its a random drop off an enemy called Shmoo ( http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Schmoo ) for which there is a farming spot a few rooms left to the save point in the second library. The drop is quite rare, so you'll be farming the enemy for quite a while until you get it. Or not (power of RNG ;) ). Equip a familiar (sword, or fairy) while you are at it to level them up as well..

Once you've got it, the entire second area is now practically open to you. :)

So why not beat the hardest boss in the game at this point? :) Thats Galamoth, btw. and on the way to him you also find a room - near a savepoint, with a single "frozen half" in it, which you easily can farm (with Crissaegrim) until you are about lv 50 (which only takes a few minutes).

This enemy also drops Necklace of J (DEF+5), which you could/should equip two of at this stage, because dealing damage is less of an issue at this point in the game, than having the convenience of having most enemies only hit you for 1 dmg. :)

At chara level 50 Galamoth shouldn't be too much of a problem either. Especially since the Alucard mail protects you against thunder, and Crissaegrim can reach him even while he is doing the thunder attack on you, so you have plenty of time to damage him, really. :)

From this point forward - continue exploring the rest of the game. :)

Notable spots, you'd probably want to visit soonish:

To the right of the second halfs clock room (think 13 strikes ;) ), there is a room with 3 high powered enemies, you can easily use to farm to lv 70 in a few minutes. (At which point you should have close to or above 1000 HP.) Also, there IS a savespot near by that you'll want to use to fill up on health.

edit: Turns out, those are probably the best enemies to get you to lv 70 in the game, so here is a refined strat to beat them, after entering the room, while you are on the last step already smash the attack button with Crissaegrim equipped, this will trigger the guardian to raise its shield. You can then stop attacking for a short while until you get closer, then mash attack once he lowers his shield. He will then eventually rise his shield again (if you are close), so you repeat this process twice/three times until he is dead. The second enemy will be dead by then as well (Crissaegrim has reach ;) ). Exit the room the way you came in and repeat (its faster than transitioning the room, because of the "free" second kill). If you dont like the rhythm, you can kill the three foes on the other side of the door as well - before you reenter (if you are also leveling familiars, this is fine). This tactic assures, that the Guardian will not attack you at all - and be open for damage faster, because once you reach him for the first time, he will already be about to lower his shield. With both +5 ATK gauntlets equipped, you can two-cycle the guardian eventually. Thats the fastest way. :) edit2: With Ring of Ares equipped two-cycle becomes easier. :)

Near the second version of the "starting drawbridge" area, there is a corridor with fire wargs and a few other enemies, which is a good (probably not the best place) to level your familiars (sword and fairy f.e.) to about lv50 (enemies also drop gems).

Thats pretty much it - have fun. :)

Oh yes, and these are the maps (online resources) you'll want to use eventually:

https://www.fantasyanime.com/valhalla/castlevaniasotn/castlevsotn_maps.htm

You can refrain from using them until you entered the second "half" of the game - which makes the game more fun. :) Then the incentive to pinpoint the bosses you have to beat to get the items to access the final boss, probably is high enough, that you'll use them. :)

Notable other items you'd want to get at one point or another:
Fairy and Sword familiar (first half of the game)
Shield rod (for cheese, first half of the game)
Walk armor (first half of the game, gradually becomes the "best" armor in the game (but Alucards mail has elemental resists))

Shaders also finally should allow you to crop the black bars off of PAL games (if the switch version works with one of them as expected). The “image-adjustment” shader has an option just for that. Use google. Havent set it up before (always used custom aspect ratio), but fingers crossed, that it works. :)

Super nice progress! Fast Forward seems to not work in this latest build though - hope we can get that fixed again :)

Also, perf seems to be quite bad when playing around with shaders. CRT-Easymode and Caligari still perform at full speed, anything other than that seems to drop the framerate significantly.

Loading symphony of the night crashes
Can anyone try to see if it works for them?
I'll see how it goes on mine

Edit: it launches just fine, might just be your ROM or Retroarch settings
