Why do some sites offer update .pkgs if they're not related to PSN and can be obtained just by running games?

People are afraid of them being taken down. I have the entire ps3 update collection, which you can download from a txt file with wget.

Nintendo has done that for their 3DS/Wii U eShops, but it feels inevitable a full shutdown is imminent.

This is why I hate digital format, well at least the DRM'd one. They can take it away and if no one backed it up, then it's gone forever.

just tested it again as that previous image was from last year. install wget with pacman, then use this command with the txt I've provided to backup all ps3 game updates. there should be over 7,000 links. there's another one lurking somewhere on the internet with all updates, all regions, for ps3, vita, psp, etc, which is about 40,000 links. it's like 5TBs in size, but this is about 1.27TBs or so.

Are .ecm, .ape, .cdda, .sub, .img, .pbp, .mds, .mdf and .wav PS1 file extensions only or also PS2's?

Ecm, ape are compression iirc. Cdda and wav are audio. Sub, img, mds, and mdf are images.

I've read PS1 games have more lag in PS3 than in the PS2. If so, POPStarter might have an advantage over PS3 even though it's less compatible, IIRC.
