I recently hacked my 3ds and I tried installing dragon quest ix on it. But it has an anti-piracy measure that causes it to fade to black after the first battle. I tried using a supposedly patched (though very old) ROM after that(I do own the game physically, but don't want to delete my save file there), but that wasn't much better. Instead of fading to black after the first battle, it fades to white after the cutscene that follows.

Edit: if you mean the DS scene ROM tool, I just tried that it's not working either. It still has the fade to white problem
