"Enhanced" Final Fantasy IX Available Now On PS4

During today's PlayStation Press Conference in Japan, Square Enix revealed that the beloved and timeless classic, FINAL FANTASY IX, is available digitally for the PlayStation 4 now.

Originally released in 2000, FINAL FANTASY IX for the PlayStation 4 gives players the chance to relive a classic tale of love, magic and self-discovery with various enhancements including high-definition movies and character models, trophy support, auto-save functionality and optional game boosters including high-speed mode and no encounter mode.

It seems like it is the same version of the game released on PC and smartphones last year.

FINAL FANTASY IX is available digitally now for the PS4 for £16.99/ €20.99. Those who purchase the digital edition will also receive an original custom theme designed by Toshiyuki Itahana and eight key character avatars.

To celebrate the release, the game will be available for a discounted price of £13.59 / €16.79 for PlayStation Plus members until 26th September.

Yeah I am surprised. In any way you wanted to slice it (numbered games, PS1 era of games*, at the time, in the time since) I always found 9 to be fairly well regarded. From where I sat 8 was always the one that was considered the out and out worst of the PS1 era, though how bad it was varies from just not as good as the others to really quite bad. Depending upon the nature of your fanboy streak, or maybe just personal preference, 7 may have ranked higher than 9 but at no point was 9 considered a bad one.

*1 through 6 are undoubtedly the same style of game, I find 7-9 mix it up a bit, 10 a bit more, 12 definitely, 13 was barely recognisable and 14 different again. So much variation makes the term final fantasy clone quite tricky for me (there was that LOTR game that was quite clearly a clone of heavily inspired by 10 but nobody would play it and think of FF6 sort of thing) and I tend to reserve it for games wanting to be 1-6.

Thinking back through 9 I can't really recall anything that would make it not hold up today really, though the 1 health story events still annoy a bit.

I personally think this game has a lot of potential to receive a full-fledged remake instead of a remaster. Or at least, a full remaster with revised character models and improved background textures. I think SE did an average job on this game.

Welp, an inferior port.

Get it on PC and then install the background mod and sound effect restoration mod, it's like how it should've been. And lookie here, Square Enix was yet again too damned lazy to port the game, but instead leave it to some no name company who can't port worth crap. This makes the Tales of Symphonia PC port look polished.

SE didn't port it, some other company did, like the PC port was handled by Silicon studios Thailand, who didn't do that good of a job.
