Future Yakuza games will continue to be turn-based, says developer

yakument.jpg

With the official announcement of Lost Judgement, development team Ryu ga Gotoku has taken to an interview to talk about the game and what fans can expect. They also clarified some details regarding the Yakuza series, and that due to the success of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, that franchise's gameplay will remain turn-based for the time being, while the Judgement series will take the mantle as the studio's more traditional action-based release going forward.

The Yakuza series has been transformed into a turn-based RPG. On the other hand, over the years, Ryu ga Gotoku Studio has accumulated resources and know-how of making flashy and exhilarating action games that are effortless to enjoy. We decided that we should let our signature action gameplay live on through Lost Judgment.

Ryu ga Gotoku knows that fans love the gameplay of previous entries, and they've become accustomed to creating these types of 3D brawlers. So, if you're not a fan of the shift to RPG that Yakuza has taken, the decision is here to stay, but if you want more classic Yakuza-style gameplay, you'll need to look to Judgement to fill that position.

... Sometimes there are comments that sound like they're coming off people who've lived in a basement all their lives and this has to be one of them.

I grew up on the actual realism of Gang Fighting, I've done my share of Real-Time combo finishes, so I can bear a little embellishment and repetitiveness from my Video Games.

I don't glorify violence.
I don't get a hard-on from Brutality Finishes nor War FPS.

I have friends in all places, which is how my Empathy grew.
I enjoy the Yakuza Games for the same reason I do the Japanese or Hong Kong Gang Films; they speak of an actual lifestyle I can relate to, especially in this neck of the woods.
I've lived in a pretty poor third world neighborhood for almost all my life so violence isn't a stranger to me but I don't understand what that has to do with videogames? And repetitiveness isn't something to be encouraged in videogames. Also nobody is playing Hitman because they get a hard on from murder or any other game for that matter. Combat in videogames is the same kind of satisfying as music for me which makes turn based combat impossible to enjoy for a huge margin of people like me (unless there's some really interesting mechanic that keeps it fresh). I don't see why you think me not enjoying seeing the same attack thousands of times sounds like something someone who lived in his basement his whole life would say but go off mate.

Sems like an odd choice to suddenly change genres. I'd think it'd work if mainline games were one style, like brawling, and spin off games
were another style, like RPG.

.....But I do ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I don't mind. Brawler worked for Kiryu because he was basically a one-man army, however Ichiban relies on others, so a rpg is better for him.

We're getting the best of both worlds here, if people don't like a style they can stick to the other series.

Well, count me out, then. I thought it was just a joke at the beginning. Granted, I still haven't got my hands on the game, but I'm going to hop off the series and just watch its gameplay online. Turn-based gameplay (IMO) is just awful; especially when it's being utilized in an open-world setting.

You know what the funny thing is? Sure, I'm not THAT big of a fan of turn based Yakuza either, but they actually said they might've changed it back if Yakuza Like A Dragon wasn't a success. However, it turned out to be a huge success. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakuz...uza: Like a Dragon was, sold in Japan and Asia. It's funny because people were expecting it to fail, while it definitely didn't fail. It sold 300,000 copies in 4 days in Japan! That is quite impressive. It'll be sad to see the beat-em-up system go, but the next few games, will also tell Ichi's story, and Ichi sees the world as some sort of Dragon Quest game, so it's not weird that we're playing it as a Dragon Quest game. To me, it was still a Yakuza game, except for the combat then.

The only Yakusa game I played was 0 it reminds me of beat down fist of vengeance however beat down was kinda better. I won't judge the turn base decision because I didn't play the latest one.

However

Haven't played Like a Dragon yet, but I don't personally mind the new direction for the series, even if I prefer action RPGs instead of turn based.

I do like turn-based combat, since it allows me to think about what I want to do next; it's particularly good if it has automation features a la Bravely Default/Second - speed-up and preset commands to get through random encounters, for example.
As for more action-oriented systems, I prefer either the Xenoblade Chronicles system (weaker auto-attacks building up more powerful Arts that have additional effects, retaining some elements of "turn-based") or the Final Fantasy XII system (the player can construct rather complex macros for AI characters, and it's still kinda turn-based).

What does this have to do with Yakuza? Not much, except to recommend automation features that Bravely 3DS has.

Funny how most people here hate the rpg fighting method they used in Like a Dragon ...

I never played the old Yakuza games as the fighting looked super bad to me so like a Dragon was the first one of the series I bought and I liked it a lot.

have to admit it wasn't really deep and they really need to change some stuff to make it more interesting all together I liked this a lot and am happy about their descision as I would probably not buy a new title again if they switched back to the old style

Yakuza: Like a Dragon was probably my favorite game from last year and it's easily the most time I've spent on my Series X. I'm not out to change anyone's mind nor do I care what anyone else thinks. I personally felt like the change in play style allowed them to tell a deeper, more engaging story which didn't revolve around the journey of a single character. It knew what it was, and it payed homage to the tropes of the rpgs that came before it (Dtagon Quest especially) while poking fun at itself. I'm absolutely over the moon that it sold well and that they're going to make more like it. I can't wait to see where they're going to take the series.

Well, there goes one of my all time favorite game series since 2006 ruined (for me at least) just like that, what's next? Resident Evil 9 turning to a side scroller game like contra or metal slug?

That would actually be really cool, a horror side scroller similar to maybe heart of darkness but with RE vibes. Dang I would play the hell out of that
