I remember when GAME brought Electronics Botique.
Actually EB bought GAME, but there were more GAME stores so they just rebranded the EB stores.
I hope this means my local Gamestation won't close as its in Blockbuster, who bought Gamestation a few years back.
Actually (and don't quote me on this) but I heard EB chose to rebrand as GAME because in quite a few towns/cities that had both GAME and EB stores, sales were higher at GAME than EB. Also GAME is obviously a lot more synonymous with videogames than "Electronic Boutique" or "EB".
To chip in regarding GAME and Gamestation... I never really saw it as what store was the best... like GAME were better for new releases and Gamestation were better for pre-owned titles, so I went to both. My local GAME used to have a permenant 10-30% off prices for many new titles (yes!), they stocked a great range of games, have a crazy good return policy, and although they don't do it now GAME used to have some cool trade in offers towards new titles e.g. trade in any 4 used games and get a new one for 99p.
Gamestation on the other hand has many more preowned titles than new ones and they have some pretty good prices and deals on like the 2 for £10 and 4 for £20 offers. Last summer I spent hundreds of pounds buying up rare stuff like Disgaea for £5-10 a pop and flogging it on ebay for £30 or whatever the going rate was at the time. It's also cool that they stock video game merchandise and retro stuff even if some of the retro stuff is horribly overpriced
(e.g. £60 for Secret of Mana PAL with the most beat up box I've ever seen).
