GoldenEye 007 official remaster announced by Rare, for Xbox and Switch

GoldenEye 007 was confirmed to be part of the Nintendo Switch Online offerings of N64 titles during the Nintendo Direct today, but that wasn't all--the game will be getting a full remaster treatment, courtesy of Rare. A number of improvements will be made to the classic, including 4K resolution, smoother framerate, achievements, 16:9 widescreen, and online play. Dual analog stick support has also been added, to modernize the control scheme. If you own Rare Replay, you'll get the game for free, or if you have Xbox Game Pass, GoldenEye 007 will also be a part of that library.

Kinda confused about the differences between the Switch & Xbox versions.
Is the switch getting the basic rom version just updated with the NSO bits and online play, while the Xbox gets the full 4k remaster but no online play?

If so its a bit mad in my opinion to lock online play to the console with the smallest online player base.

The N64 version actually already had dual analog support for single-player mode if you use 2 controllers. It also supports using either the D-pad or C-buttons for movement and the joystick for free-aiming, like several other FPS games on the console. That's actually part of why the N64 controller was designed the way it was designed, so you could hold it 3 different ways for different types of games.

The first way to hold it is with both hands on the outside grips, this was intended for 2D games. The second way to hold it is with your left hand in the middle, this was intended for the majority of 3D games. The third way to hold it is with your right hand in the middle, and this was mostly used in first-person games (as well as some mini-games in things like Pokemon Stadium or Mario Party). An additional way to hold these controllers was to hold a different controller in each hand for dual analog control, but very few games actually used this (GoldenEye being one of them), and obviously none of them made it a requirement.
remember, amazon owns 007 now and nobody has exclusive rights to games based on the IP currently, it was the perfect time for this.
Amazon only owns MGM, which co-owns the copyrights to the first 20 films with Danjaq (a holding company for Eon) and has an exclusive distribution deal with them for the films. Danjaq still owns all film rights to 007 as a character and as an IP, and Danjaq is still owned by the Broccoli family. Any re-release of this would still need to be worked out with Danjaq/Eon as they hold the license (the video game companies can't just re-release it without permission), Amazon's purchase of MGM is kind of irrelevant.

I can't imagine it's in the cards, since Nintendo doesn't really do much to improve these experiences in the Switch Online services or in the past on Virtual Console. But please, please, add the ability to properly aim with the right stick and/or with the gyro. If nothing else, maybe the 2 controller control scheme built within Goldeneye can maybe be selected and the game is tricked into thinking the second controller's stick is really just the right control stick on the same controller?

Yeah, my expectations are low in this regard. Cuz yeah, Goldeneye is fantastic, but if you don't improve the controls on the Switch, then it's not gonna be worth revisiting on the system, even if it is the only place to officially play it online. That isn't to say I need all the perks of the Xbox version, low resolution and low framerates as they were in the original experience, genuinely are fine by me. Its the controls more than anything that need to be addressed.

The "online" in the Nintendo online emulated roms is literally just local multiplayer with some hackey adhoc networking.

It's not dedicated online. This is why it's so abysmal. Literally nobody has a good experience with the online in Nintendo's emulators. It's laggy and terrible.

It's just the normal local mp but with adhoc and Xbox has local mp.

Return to Dream Land?
What's special about it?
It's a 10+ year old game which looks horribly worse on the trailer than it does on Dolphin with upscaling.
Compared to a bare bones N64 emulated rom with a little online added?

I think you're missing the point of the remaster of this game.
For NSO, yeah it's a shitty emulation with shitty connectivity, for Xbox Online Pass it's a full-on remaster and reworked from the source code from the looks of it.
If it were a mere ROM it wouldn't have modern controls nor 16:9.

I was only talking about the NSO one but either way, from the looks of things it doesn't look that much better than what modders have done with the game for PC emulation. On the plus side, Games Pass so I wouldn't need to pay for my curiosity only to find there are like only 3 decent levels and terrible escort parts.

I'm concerned with what I was reading with a different article stating that Rare stated that only the switch version will have online play.

I presumed that the 360 port will be the base of the Xbox version, but I really, REALLY hope that at the very least ad-hoc multiplayer is supported

As someone who still uses my 360 without a One, I'd buy it
I doubt Microsoft would even legally be able to release it on the 360, but I could be very wrong on that statement. I also think the post was referring to releasing the remaster on the current Xbox consoles, and not on the 360, but again, I could be very wrong on that.

Do you have a decent PC? You could likely experience that port on an emulator if you want (or if you want to mod your 360) so long as you could source it

And are every one of those 32 million paying NSO members? I bet that includes people who have Nintendo accounts who use the shop etc. There's no way they have that many paying for their Emulators/Online play bundle!

If that's not the case then stand corrected and will hope that online play will come to Xbox in the end via a patch. It will be the superior version overall anyway I expect.

I think local multiplayer for Xbox was confirmed on a tweet, can't recall the exact words tho.

well if system link IS supported, then that would just further confirm that its likely going to be the 360 remaster; because maybe they stripped the xbox live component out of it but left the system-link capability (or maybe Xbox Live support was never finished on the remaster)

    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.

the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze

but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
