well i think the switch is similar to the gamebooy line where they could support the console for a really long time as log as it sells, the only weird thing is the lack of a "pro" model, maybe they dont want to risk after the "New" nintendo 3ds model where they didnt even use the extra power for the games as well as third party did
so maybe maximum to 2025 if a new console is announced,if not who knows, maybe they want to break the record of most selling console first
My money says a successor will be a Switch 2. Of course it will be more powerful and very likely better Joy-Con. But this is also Nintendo, they've rarely been eager to settle on just a more powerful iteration as a proper full-on follow-up system, at least not in recent years. They like to bring something unique to the table each time.
So while my thought is the followup will be a Switch 2, I think they'd be very clever to look back only 1 gen to see what they could bring to the Switch 2 to make it stand out from everything out there, including the likes of the Steam Deck. And that is what the 3DS and Wii U brought to gaming:
What if portably, the Switch 2 offers the glasses-free 3D effect of the 3DS? Like you have an option, 1080p on the go, or if the game is capable, 3D but with only 720p as the compromise.
Meanwhile, what if while docked, the Switch 2 recognizes the reality that many Switch 2 owners will still own a Switch 1, and what if you can (always optionally mind you) link up your Switch 1 with a Switch 2 for dual screen gaming, not unlike what the Wii U was trying to accomplish?
Seems like a great idea to me, finding the value in the previous gen and carrying them over to the Switch family with its more powerful follow-up series, while at the same time giving both handheld and docked play their own unique draws.
Well, if I’m not mistaken they spent like 60% more on R&D last fiscal year. So I’m saying 2023 and am willing to die on that hill . Then after the new one comes out we’ll see them try and clear “Switch 1” inventory the same way they got rid of remaining 3DS units on the switch’s second to third year.
The UK CMA eluded to nintendo switch online being available on another device at some point.
"Nintendo’s cloud gaming service is
only available on the Nintendo Switch device and (Redacted)"
More likely than not that the redacted text names another device rathee than saying something like, 'and no other devices' but whether or not that is a switch successor? Who knows? Could be another device that is already available.
Keep in mind, the Switch was announced in November 2016 and released in March 2017, there was only 4 months from announcement to release. Heck I wouldn't be shocked to see that echoed again, announced in November of this year, released in spring of next year, or announced spring of next year and released in holiday of next year.
The Switch is incredibly successful and saved Nintendo. It's 6 years old now and Nintendo claimed a year ago that the Switch is still in the middle of its lifecycle. The heavily speculated Switch Pro was apparently real but got cancelled.
I can understand that Nintendo is reluctant to release new hardware. The Wii U failed, there are chip shortages and the Switch is still making money. At the same time, gaming companies are always working on new hardware and the Switch was released on outdated hardware, hardware which is far more outdated today. Emulation has become a big enough problem that soon some games will have anti-emulation code built into them.

Yeah they said similar things about the Wii when it was like 4 years in its life despite the Wii U coming out 2 years later. Also keep in mind having a lifespan of 10 years doesn't mean it's successor wont come out before it dies. Look at the PS4 and Xbone, those consoles are still living strong despite their successors being available going on 3 years now.

Nintendo isnt one to keep supporting their old consoles after a new one releases. maybe 6 months max. At least if we are referring to generations after the Gamecube.

GBA, 3DS. Yes they are, doesn't happen a lot, but very easy to see happen with the Switch as well. In fact at this point it'd be ridiculous to think that the day the Switch 2 comes out, the Switch 1 will be dead and games will cease to come out for it. Just as we can say at this point that the PS4 and Xbone have had 10+ year lifespans, it's very easy to see the Switch follow those same kinds of footsteps.

I mean I think we all wish Nintendo would just keep upgrading the Switch hardware. But knowing Nintendo the next system will have to have it's own gimmick.

Dude, read the world around you. If you think the Switch has 4+ full years ahead of it (to get to 10 full year) before its successor takes its place, you're delusional.
It's not hard to see that the successor will almost certainly be a backwards compatible Switch 2 utilizing the same servers, and digital storefront, the two are going to live alongside each other for at least a few years. This isn't even something I'm dying for mind you, it's just the most logical thing that will happen, even by Nintendo's standards.
My thoughts on the gimmick you speak of is: in portable form, glasses-free 3D like the 3DS, in docked form, the ability to pair with a Switch 1 (or another Switch 2) for optional dual screen Wii U-like play, (I mean with already nearly 130 million Switchs out there, it'd be so easy to get Switch 2 owners into a dual screen environment without having to charge extra for some built-in screen controller).

A really good reason why they're still going is because they're still really good consoles spec wise
The jump from the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5 is still significant, but for anyone not making a AAA blockbuster, the PS4 is still more than capable
Plus, the PS4 has a massive install base (nearly 120 million) and as a result you're more likely to get game sales on the PS4 vs the newer PS5 (which only has a market share currently of about 30 million)
It's the perfect example of "newer is not always better"

Indeed, and the Switch has even surpassed the PS4's massive install base to become the third highest selling gaming system of all time, only behind the PS2 and DS.
Plus, just as retro styled games and collections continue to saturate the digital only gaming landscape, its very easy to see, that like the PS4, the Switch will be around for quite awhile even once it's successor arrives.
