Whenever I run the renamed POPStarter.ELF via SMB from the game I want to play on wLE, it says: "Connecting to smb... LOGON has failed (0).".

EDIT: Sorry for the duplicated thread.

You absolutely can use SMB to play both PS2 and PS1 games on OPL.
I believe the information you're looking for is here:
https://bitbucket.org/ShaolinAssassin/popstarter-documentation-stuff/wiki/quickstart-smb
There's also a lot of help @ psx-place.
They have an app called pops2apps and it will get your PS1 games listed in the apps section via popstarter.elf.

I already followed those instructions and like I said, whenever I run the renamed POPStarter.ELF from the game I want to play on wLE, it says: "Connecting to smb... LOGON has failed (0).". Those instructions aren't for running POPStarter on OPL.

Just to be sure, do PS1 games lag on POPStarter via USB, especially in FMVs?

Anyway, like I said, I'll play PS1 games on the PS3 since it's easier for me and it seems it's more compatible than on the PS2.

What's the difference between pop2apps and POPStarter Game Installer?

Have you put in the proper IP and gateway information as instructed? Once its set up it works great - better than on PS3 in my opinion for some games.

pops2apps just gets the listing on the Apps page if you were having trouble doing that.

It is also possible that you do not have SMB1 enabled on your PC.

Yes. What games are those that work better on POPStarter than on the PS3?

I also had this issue on OPL Daily Build versions which had the "PS1" tab (I don't know how to run POPStarter in official OPL versions since they don't have this tab unlike OPL Daily Builds' and I've yet to use pop2apps).

Yes, I do. I can play PS2 games on OPL via SMB.

I was told POPStarter wasn't more compatible with PS1 games than the PS3 and it's easier to set them on the latter as well, so I prefer to play them on it.

I won't try to sell you on it - just that it can be fixed and once it is fixed it works. :)

I would start with IPCONFIG.DAT and SMBCONFIG.DAT in notepad. It is the only thing that makes sense.
If PS2 games are working on SMB, then those files mentioned are exclusive to popstarter smb and will be directly related to the connection issue.

EDIT:
Also, the BEST PS1 game playback is burned PS1 discs running on PS2 via TonyHax International.
But this is a very specific exploit and set up.
I use the FF9 Save Exploit to Launch It - There Are Other Methods.

Just tried it. I still have the same error message.

My PS2 isn't compatible with Tonyhax and I don't want to burn games to not wear the PS2's laser.

Just tried it. I still have the same error.
I'm actually upset about it. I want it to work for you :(
I would redownload the SMB pack and start from beginning, re-enter the IP and gateway information etc.
Its gotta be something simple like a number in the place of another or something.
You've got it launching the right popstarter, you've got it looking for the VCD - but its failing to find the host to pull said VCD. (Even though its loaded the app's .elf from SMB to begin with, and then POPStarter from tyour MC)

I also had some trouble getting popstarter to recognize my smb folder.

Did you enable SMB 1.0 on windows? That seems to disable itself for me randomly for some reason, and it is required

What do you mean by "SMB pack"? I was only able to run PS1 games on POPStarter via USB. Maybe FMVs don't even lag on the latter (or less, at least) unlike PS2 games on OPL via USB. Anyway, I followed step-by-step again and I had the same issue.

Yes. Mine doesn't disable by itself.

What do you mean by "SMB pack"? I only managed to run games via USB. Maybe their FMVs don't even lag so SMB isn't worth it. Anyway, I did the whole process again and I had the same issue.

Yes. Mine doesn't disable by itself.

SMB pack is just POPStarter in debug mode with memory card files. Obviously you're already doing that.
But you're literally doing everything right it sounds like.
Super bazaar dude. I just can't wrap my head around it not connecting. It bugs me 'cause it should work - and its literally working for me.
I've reviewed all my files and I can't think of a single thing outside of the tutorial and the SMB quick start zip that would matter.

You've added GUEST and all that jazz? I'm sorry, you seem to know what you're doing its just I'm an idiot and I got it to work so I feel obligated to try and help.

I just do this and it works every time. Guest access turned on of course. SB.game.ELF. SMB>POPS>game.vcd

I do have GUEST and no password which the tutorial doesn't specify to do actually. Maybe that?

I have my games on PS3 too but thats not really the point.

Yes, I did. Maybe it's me who's an idiot and is doing something wrong.

I first tried without Guest access and then with it. In both cases I tried with no password.

Could you tell me if PS1 games lag on POPStarter via USB, especially in FMVs?

I have never experienced lag on POPStarter games, via USB HDD or SMB.
But I will say, that compatibility varies between the three. So I have each game 3 times and labeled (SMB) (USB) (HDD)
And then delete the least compatible one as I play them over time.
You're not dumb. Its just frustrating 'cause i'm sitting here looking at it working and I want to share that.

Anyway, it seems it's possible to run POPStarter on the latest official OPL Beta versions via USB from the "APPS" tab but I was told a 2.5" external HDD shouldn't be connected to a single PS2 USB port since the PS2 mightn't provide enough energy to power it. An USB flash drive, a self-powered external HDD (a 3.5" one) , an USB-powered external one (a 2.5" external HDD) connected to both PS2 USB ports via an USB Y-cable or a 2.5" external HDD connected to the PS2 via self-powered USB hub could be used but since I want to host all the PS1 and PS2 games in the same device, I want it to be an external HDD (and a 2.5" one, since it's smaller than a 3.5" one and doesn't connect to a socket) because I was told it lasts longer than an USB flash drive, I don't want to waste an extra socket and I don't want to use an USB Y-cable or a self-powered USB hub, I'll play PS1 games on the PS3 even if I get POPStarter running via SMB (and in an official OPL version) since it's also easier for me and it seems the PS3 is more compatible with them than the PS2.

EDIT: Since I want to use the same 2.5" external HDD I do for running PS2 games via SMB and for that I'd need an USB Y-cable or a self-powered USB hub, I'll keep playing PS1 games on the PS3 since it's also easier for me and it seems the PS3 is more compatible with them than the PS2, so I won't waste more time trying to run POPStarter at all.

It's very subtle lag. It's usually not major, but certain big levels that lag on the backwards compatibility layer of the ps2, lag more on popstarter.

Could you explain yourself better? Do games lag via SMB?
I don't think its SMB/USB/etc that causes the lag.

POPS is an emulator, while playing PS1 games off of a disk, uses the PS1 hardware baked into the PS2. So the emulator is inherently a bit more choppy.

For FMV's. that is a different story, I have heard USB is a bit slower for those.

Have you had FMV lag on POPStarter via SMB?
