I want to be able to run my launch-model Switch's video output (docked, through HDMI) through my Macbook Pro, since I don't have a TV or monitor handy at times - and I cannot stand the reduced resolution and sound quality of handheld mode, ugh, or the bloody JoyCons.

It is possible to do such, and if so, how? I've got a HDMI-to-USB-C adapter, and plugged it into my Macbook Pro, but...nothing. Do I need to fiddle with display settings or something?

3 main options if the laptop does not have a video in option (which are super rare, and I don't think I have ever seen on a mac)

1) You hack the Switch and do the network video thing. Not ideal really.

2) You get some kind of video capture device for the laptop. Could be a bit pricey for one that operates at a suitable resolution and latency but people have done this before you.

3) Internally most screens are going to be probably embedded displayport in their protocol, though you will have to check. The same things people do to wire up otherwise nice working screens of dead laptops also work to create a video pass through if you get really crazy. This is quite the engineering feat on a normal laptop, for something as anti user serviceable as the average piece of apple nastiness then if you are asking this question you are probably nowhere close. The screen will only display what is coming in via the cable (I guess you could buy further devices to blend in footage/do picture in picture and you are also back to network or buying capture devices if you wanted to do that.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Booo.

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in

    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
