I hack my friends psp's for free -.- Yeah, Selling the pirated games was a no-no, but i do understand that alot of people are not very tech savvy, so the modding part was okay, but "brick protection"? He went way too far there, and the prices shouldn't have went over $25. Anyways, you wouldn't believe it, but there was a guy selling psp mods for $300! it cam with a 16 gb memory card, true, but it came with pirated games PRELOADED. He was also selling "specially modded DS cartridges" with even more outrageous prices.

here in the philippines, there are stalls (or is it stands???) and even stores that are just for hacking PSP's, downloading DS games (as if that wasn't easy enough. you're also forced to buy a flash card - usually a bad R4 clone) jailbreaking iPhones, etc. inside malls, believe it or not. and yeah, they get away with it.

I agree with JKR, he's not scamming anyone. He's just selling his own service. If you don't know how to he will hack your Wii for a fee. He's charging over the odds but if people want to do that its fine. The only illegal/immoral thing he was doing is selling putting Wii games onto a harddrive (seriously, he's charging less for that than the actual modding!!)
He could also do with being more clear as to what actual modding he is doing. I assume its HBC and USBLoaders but its hard to tell cause his ad is so vague

Scammer?

I think you need to read a dictionary because I highly doubt that was his intention. He isn't selling the hacks, he's performing them for others who may either lack the capacity to do so or are afraid. What's better? This guy or others like him perform the hacks for a small fee or this forum and others like it are flooded with the same questions over and over and over because as I mentioned above most people cannot or are actually wary of altering their Wii in any way and would prefer to have someone with experience do it for them.

You're a douche and you had no right to attack him in the way you did without justification. I could understand if he was charging an exorbitant amount for the service but if not, mind your own business and move along.
I hate to say it but he's right.
He wasn't scamming anyone. He was merely providing his soft-modding services for those who didn't want to do it themself.

there 2 conflicting points of view here... i think, personally, some people just need a way to make money, and whether he is scamming or not is up to your standards of definition. however, i would like to point out that by "selective disinformation" he is basically making people scam themselves. put it this way: a person only pays for services if he believes cannot do it himself, or at least if he cannot do it with any kind of confidence whatsoever in what he is trying to do. sometimes you get what you pay for, sometimes it's just you who thinks you get what you pay for, if you know what i mean.

His ad is so vague its impossible to tell what it means from a cursory glance. You'd have to have looked into Wii Modding first to figure out what he was going to do to it.

Small fee?
Small fee is like 5$ plus shipping.

Most people don't mod their Wii because they don't understand how easy it is.

If you linked someone to a simple step by step guide, even the dumbest of morons could mod a Wii.

The guy was a scammer, he was charging retarded prices for a 15 minute or less process if you're prepared.

Also did you see that he was selling a 'brick protection' or something service for more? THAT was an outright scam.

Your argument is baseless.

Not to mention he was SELLLING pirated games. Did you (JKR) even read the ad?

Not my point. Selling pirated games is wrong and as I mentioned above, charging a premium is ridiculous but I don't see what is wrong with charging someone for your time to mod their equipment for them.

And again, not everyone even with the best guide in the world, can mod their Wii. I was merely attacking the conversation you had with him in which you berated him for daring to make some money off of the time it takes to actually mod the system.

I'm not going to change my mind, you're still wrong.

Let me ask you a question. What if...lets say your air conditioner started acting funny...and you call up the place and they said that you need to change your air filter, and they would be able to do it for $500. You do no research in HOW to change your air filter, but the nice man on the other end of the phone is willing to do it for you and you pay him.

Do you consider this a scam?

Gotta agree with you guys. Making the response add to the "scammer" was uncalled for. He wasn't doing anything wrong. Ethically, maybe he was charging a bit much, but he's a 15 year old kid in Vegas. There probably aren't many places willing to hire him. You definitely can't use the argument that what he did is illegal considering you offered the same service in response. Had you just emailed him saying that it's illegal and that he shouldn't be charging so much for something that can be obtained for free, and in response he called you a douche and insulted you, I would 100% be on the OP's side. But really, this was just uncalled for.

I'm not getting into hypothetical situations just to stroke your ego.

Bottom Line:
- selling pirated games = wrong
- charging large amounts of money for a softmod = wrong

I've already said everything else I wanted to say about this.

I dont see the modding part as a scam no matter what. I myself has modded people's PSP/Recomended the best type of DS flashcart for money. Though i never ever provided them with insurance and/or pirated games. I just tell them to use google. And yes i DO WARN them of how easy it is and the downside/brick if PSP(never ever bricked a PSP so lol).

@Dudeonine's last post. That depends. Is it service like in when you turn in your DS for nintendo to repair the broken parts for a certain fee? Because if it is i dont see that as a scam.

EDIT: K i didnt see the price before this EDIT. That was just rip-off. Not scamming. People would want a pay for their service but this is...

you won't answer my question because you know it's wrong but you still want to uphold your opinion. It's cool. I get it.

to everyone else: Hey, yeah I get it, you mod for money. Still doesn't make it right, guys. 15 year old kid or not, I really don't give a fuck. There are plenty of ways here to earn money, if you're not lazy. Yeah, the modding part, fine yeah not a scam...maybe. but charging more for "brick protection"? come on now. Same thing with modding PSPs. Its okay though seriously, you have your opinions and I have mine. end of story

Look, bottom line is do your research or get burned. There are some unscrupulous individuals in the world who would leap at the chance to part an idiot of their cash but there are also honest ones as well like myself. Don't lump everyone modder-for-profit into a scammer bracket because it makes you look like an idiot.

Bottom line is, this guy was being dishonest, and I called him out on it. if you don't like it, tough shit. If you explain how easy the modding process is, is one thing, even though thats still meh, but in no way shape or form was this guy doing it. Defend him all you want. I'm done with him.

No, you were just showing off. Why else would you do what you did and then post it here?

You think you're a holier-then-thou white knight of copyright protection trying to save every noob from themselves and protect poor companies from having their games sold without a profit for them when in reality, it's none of your business what people do other then yourself. Next time, just ignore it and move on.

I did it for fun, and I showed it here because it was funny. Yes, its funny, but the stick up your ass won't let you see that, but thats okay too.

and LOL white knight of copyright protection? HAHAHAHA! I pirate all of my games. seriously. What I do have a problem with is someone making a profit off of something they never paid for in the first place as far as games go. Oh and just or your information, once you put something up on a public website such as Craigslist...it becomes everyone's business, and just like I said in the emails, I will do it again and again, if for nothing other than to piss off people like you. Good day to you, sir.

aaand your argument took a dive into insults.
That's usually where you know someone has given up, or realized they're fighting a losing battle.
Insults do not a valid argument make.

If someone wii mods for a fee, that's fine. But they should explain the process is pretty simple, and the fee should be small BECAUSE of how simple it is.

The prices the guy charged were complete ripoffs.
If you don't like the word scam, there you go. He was ripping people off.
Not even just a little bit, he was full on ripping them off.
