it doesn't qualify as a softmod either.
That is right. The whole RCM thing does not modify anything, so it is no mod. RCM is used to exploit a bug in the usb implementation to modify the software, so this is clearly a softmod.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

It would be silly to call the jumper a softmod.
It is silly to call it a mod at all - you call it hardmod...

As has been pointed out, joycon rails are dirt cheap although i'd install a reed switch inside the joycon myself.

Doesn't matter how cheap they are, if I can avoid damaging them, I'd rather do that.

Because what you're saying is that introducing the wire or paperclip doesn't count as hardware. They certainly are not a part of the Switch's hardware and must be introduced externally. The end effect is software based but cannot be achieved without a physical item being introduced which does not originally belong to the Switch.
As I said touching a wire to a pin simply is not a modification of the existing hardware therefore it is not a hardmod. By definition a hardmod is a physical change to the existing hardware. After you've shorted the pin and removed the forien object from the pin it's still the same hardware in the same configuration

A method of launching CFW through the browser on 4.1.0 exists privately, but it is unlikely to be released anytime soon for various reasons. In other words, systems on 3.0.1 and higher will probably require a jig and/or AutoRCM to launch CFW for a very long time. An untethered software exploit for launching CFW on 1.0.0-3.0.0 also exists privately, but it's likely to be released far sooner.

Buying a cheap jig or making one out of a paperclip isn't very difficult. If you're content with your device being tethered on each coldboot, you also only need a jig one time to install AutoRCM.

If you're content with using AutoRCM, you can also upgrade to 5.1.0 without burning any efuses and preserving a downgrade path back to 4.1.0.
You've been Proven a 100000 times already that that ain't true but you keep spouting this nonsense ! No a kernel exploit which Will work through the webkit exploit will be released once atmo is released. It has been said a lot of times by sciresm and still you keep Spouting this nonsense. For the 1000000th already, a kernel exploit which needs the webkit exploit will be released once atmo launches

Would be nice to see a solution that doesn't require Joycon RCM crap, especially on 5.x.x, but seeing as softmods only work up till 4.x.x, there's no sense in waiting or expecting it. RCM shouldn't be the only solution.

Just buy a new rail and cut it down, use that with pins bridged inside. Easy solution.

Didn't know Nintendo wasn't aware but the fact it's for older firmwares I'm kind of lost on why it has been kept private, I mean unless, of course, it works on the latest firmware too...

IIRC they don't have an entire exploit for the latest version, but parts of the > 3.01 exploit they have still work on the latest.

Lacius never said why its not been released to the public just that there are "various reasons". I do think it's selfish to keep things from the community, unless the reason is like you said and can be sorted by Nintendo but hasn't, yet.

SciresM explained it a while back.

You're saying that rerouting the electricity from either pins 1 or 7 into pin 10 is not a hardware modification but a software modification?

No, that isn't a modification at all. You could make a cable to do it, plugging a cable in is not a modification.

Once you're in RCM, then using the exploit is a soft mod.

What you want is an untethered softmod.

Just buy a new rail and cut it down, use that with pins bridged inside. Easy solution.

I keep meaning to do that, but I know when I do then before it arrives the untethered exploit will be released :D

Saying that the hardware is the same as without the pins touching each other as is when they are touching each other is not true since there is now a pin introduced into the hardware. That pin was not part of the base hardware and induced an abnormal current to flow that would have not flown without the pin or otherwise.
No, that isn't a modification at all. You could make a cable to do it, plugging a cable in is not a modification.

This is a difference in what you and I interpret as a modification. If you are fine equating a Switch with a cable/jig with one that does not, then that is your definition. If there is another category you wish to invent, I'm all ears.

You can downgrade to 1.0.0 and boot to RCM from there (then boot to atmo once it is out)
