Sony has acquired Halo and Destiny studio Bungie

bbbbbbbb4.png

As Microsoft continues to buy up studios across the industry, Sony isn't far behind, as they have their own acquisition to announce. Bungie, known for developing the Halo series and more recently, Destiny, will be joining the PlayStation family. Sony purchased the team in a deal valued at $3.6 billion. While it may not be as staggering as the Activision deal that Microsoft made, it shows that these major studio buyouts won't be stopping any time soon.

Originally, Bungie started out as an independent developer, and would go on to be purchased by Microsoft in 2000, where they created Halo: Combat Evolved. They would stay with Microsoft until the year 2007, when they split and became their own private company. After that, Bungie signed a contract with Activision that lead to Destiny and Destiny 2.

Sony has prefaced the deal with the fact that Bungie, despite the acquisition, will remain an independent studio and publisher, and will continue to work on multi platform releases.

I am absolutely thrilled to announce a new member will be joining the PlayStation family!

I’ve been a fan of Bungie for many years. I have admired and enjoyed the games that they create – and have great respect for their skill in building worlds that gamers want to explore again and again.

Bungie makes games with outstanding technology that are enormously fun to play. They also have unmatched dedication to the communities that play their games, and everyone at PlayStation, and PlayStation Studios, will be excited about what we can share and learn from them.

I have spent a great deal of time with the senior team at Bungie and it is clear their experience and skills are highly complementary to our own.We will be ready to welcome and support Bungie as they continue to grow, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this incredible team.

Soooo.... Sony is dating himself, and is bisexual?

What? You never said MS had more than 1 ex (nor did you explicitly state that MS's ex and Sony were different people), and if they did, that would be plain wrong, since the 'hot new wife' clearly does not know about MS's exes (unless she's a hooker, but that would be even more wrong, since the point of being a hooker is to NOT get married).

(I see so many things wrong with this statement. lol)
Tfw you make a giant pointless post about a simple joke that can just be brushed away by the simple fact gay and bi people exist... The only problem with my joke is I forgot the word "other" and I only noticed now.

Destiny 2.

38 million users. One of the biggest properties out there.
That is kinda misleading, those '38 million users' are like the total number of people who have created an account since the game release and IIRC it's taking into consideration f2p users.

I see this acquisition more like a marketing thing because Destiny aside, Bungie doesn't have any groundbreaking IPs worth losing sleep over. Halo belongs to Microsoft and Bungie last work on it was a decade ago.

Man this is madnes, well maybe not too much, but honestly this "new" strategy of buy companies with good games, from Microsoft and Sony its a deadly trap or a double edge sword, or both, ok you now got good Third party games but this also means that the dev teams of those games are "trapped" in new "politics/laws" and bye bye to their philosophie...

I know this not affect Nintendo in anyway but i hope they dont follow the steps of those 2 (MS and Sony)...

Funny how if we time traveled back to like 2006, then told everyone that Microsoft would buy Activision and Sony would buy Bungie, everybody would think we're insane.

Damn it, I was going to buy Bungie, then trade them for the Atlanta Braves which I intend to trade once more for some plain and ordinary creek beavers; those things are so hard to catch!

So, the whole taking toys from each other comparison is funny and all, but what does it say about the future of gaming that so many of the big publishers are merging into cyberpunk-tier mega corporations?

I think they're happy with just partnerships like Platinum Games. No need to waste money buying anyone.
It's not a waste if the ips are system seller, imagine EA bought by Nintendo,it will means no more Fifa and sports for Crosoft and Sony ,on the long run it will means more people will switch to Nintendo .Never overestimate the power of loyalty specially in the console realm .

EA games are too much depended on graphics which doesn't appear to be the focus of Nintendo. The Switch hardware is not exactly known for it's performance and any new system that Nintendo launches in the future will most likely also be a portable system which means that the hardware will not be that powerful either (comparing to desktop computers or even PS5/XBOX consoles).

Also I did not think that it was the case and someone feel free to correct me but I just checked and Nintendo is not as big as people may think, that is if we judge it by market cap, to put it on perspective Activision Blizzard has more market cap than Nintendo so I really doubt that Nintendo would be able to buy something like EA which has a big market cap on it's own.
