Team Xecuter reveal info on upcoming Switch modchip

SwitchTX.jpg

Just over a week ago, team Xecuter announced that they are working on a soon-to-be-revealed modchip for the Nintendo Switch. This was big news because modchip devices are usually used to circumvent anti-piracy measures on many digital platforms, but mainly gaming systems, and to see one already in the works for a machine that is only 10 months old is very rare.

Since then the team have been quiet, no one knows what the device will look like, how it will work, or when they can get their hands on one - but GBAtemp can exclusively reveal today that there will be BOTH a solder AND solderless option of team Xecuter's Nintendo Switch modchip.

Here is a direct quote from team Xecuter:

For now, I can tell you there is a solder and solderless version. We have quite a lot in the works, you will have more info soon.

The difference in pricing should be interesting in the two versions of the device, but at least you can now rest safely, knowing that the team will be providing options for whatever the Xecuter Switch modchip turns out to be.

Stay tuned to GBAtemp for more info in the upcoming weeks.

Interested to see what their solderless solution will be like.

Surely not a cartridge, but maybe they found a way to make sure of the usb port and use the "recovery mode".

Am I the only one thinking that there must be something more useful about the soldered version than the solderless one? Why even make a soldered version if the solderless one would work just fine? What do you guys think might be the disadvantage of the solderless version?

Reliability (presuming this is a permanent installation) and cost are potential issues.

I remember reading about solderless PS2 modchips potentially being unreliable because the pins got disconnected, something which is more likely on the Switch due to movement depending on the implementation.

I remember messing with their hardware on the original XBOX. Took me a while to get the hang of it, but I was eventually able to get their solder-less solution working, but in the end preferred to use their soldered options, at least until the need for chips were removed all together with reliable software hacking if not hard modding.

I've a feeling that the solder-less solution may not be stable, as in remain mounted, or might require an extra step to run custom software that the solder solution does not require.

Their choice of wording is interesting. The fact they chose to say "there is a solder and solderless version" rather than "there will be a solder and solderless version" implies they already have working or nearly working products, and they're just working on cleaning up right now. I'm very excited for the next few weeks!

Thanks for clearing up that basic English for us.

This is great new!! Most likely I will get the solder version unless the solderless version can be use to mod multiple consoles.
Or the 2 different versions are for varying FW versions, like for example higher FW's may require the soldered version but the lower ones can get away with the solderless option, just throwing that out there
Doubt that's the case. The solder points should be the same regardless the firmware version.

Poor "I do tiny soldering" guy
lol

If anything the solder less is probably going to be a clip on like the PS3 used to use. Let's just hope that if it is that it isn't nearly as fragile

That'd be my concern as well. Unless it's absurdly difficult to install I'll be more inclined to go with the soldered solution. I don't think either version is going to let us get away with not opening up the console.

What's the point of "confirming" games you know will get released. Like Nintendo "confirming" a Zelda sequel. "We can't be sure Nintendo is working on a new Zelda game, or if a new Zelda game will ever be released, until they officially confirm it."
