After following all the steps, when I try to launch any Wii backup from USB on any launcher it gives me a black screen and I need to unplug the energy cord for the console to shut down.

However Nintendont and WiiWare titles run correctly, I'm using the cIOS d2xv10-beta52-vWii

Do I need to download the wads and put them on my SD before running the cIOS installers?

Any help is gladly appreciated.

I've a random one. My Wii U currently has a huge 2TB drive on it i'd now like to use for other purposes as I dont play the Wii U much anymore.. Is there a way to either backup my saves or copy the lot to a smaller drive? (I am not interested in making a clone 1:1, I know that cant be done and would not suit my purpose ie free up the huge 2TB drive for a better purpose)
sorry for late reply.
to backup savegames, you can use homebrew. you can even restore them to another user.
you'll have to reinstall games on the new drive, and then restore backup.

can someone send a video tutorial on how to extract the files onto your sd card or atleast explain it to me
extracting which files? a zip or rar?
Please, don't attempt any hacking if you don't understand how your computer is working.
extracting a zip is the basis, it will be confusing and dangerous if you don't understand what you are doing.

the installer is used to not need the wad. using wad is dangerous and not the correct way to install cIOS (for now at least).

if your d2x cIOS is installed to your vWii (not your sd), then you are fine. Did you properly followed the guide to install the cIOS in the console?
which loader are you using? USBLoaderGX?
go to settings>credit> look at the top and report the IOS info here, or follow a syscheck guide from my signature.

your HDD (not flash, right ? NO FLASH DRIVE PLEASE) has a y-cable or is externally powered?

black screen can be :
- flash drive (don't !)
- HDD doesn't have y-Cable or external power supply
- hdd is not compatible with cIOS
- cIOS is not installed (but it should reboot)
- game is from wrong region (though, it should be fine on wiiu, as it's using hdmi, not composite cable)

what you think : no

reality:
homebrew, yes : WiiU homebrew can use USB FAT32, but it was not used a lot.
WiiU games on FAT32 : no
Wii games on WiiU HDD : yes
WiiU and vWii on different partition : no
it's possible to install Wii and gamecube games on the WiiU HDD.
it's not possible to install WiiU games on the vWii FAT32 HDD.

Hey Cyan,

Thanks for the reply! So if I'm following correctly, are vWii homebrew apps like emulators able to be put on the Wii U HDD?

vWii homebrew on WiiU : somehow.
you can inject the Wii homebrew, or its forwarder, into a WiiU WiiVC channel, as a bonus you get WiiU gamepad support (button, no touchscreen), but lose USB access. You can install them on WiiU internal memory or WiiU HDD.
But there's no real need of doing that, as you can just install them on SD card like all homebrew. You don't really need an USB for emulators, USB is required only for Wii games, and therefore injecting into a WiiVC channel allows you to install the Wii games to the same USB than WiiU games. All other homebrew can share the SD card and work in both wii or vwii mode without caring which HDD you use (or don't use).

I'm running Homebrew Launcher 1.4 on my vWii (as far as I can tell). And it won't recognize my Wii Mote.

Very strange behavior. My mote works just fine in the vWii, but as soon as I launch Homebrew it turns off and doesn't react to any button presses anymore! Meaning not even the blue lights will turn on.

Now, I've done some research and I read that newer remotes with Motion+ come with a sort of Homebrew protection, but I heard that was fixed back in Homebrew 1.1?!

Please please, if anyone can help :(

EDIT: Ughh, I bought a non-Nintendo WiiMote from eBay just to access vWii, and it seems to be a hit an miss whether it works in Homebrew Launcher or not. But after trying for the 3rd time it finally worked. My next problem was USB Loader GX where the cursor froze but the WiiMote Buttons were responsive. That too I managed to fix after a quick restart. I also noticed that I can use the Pro Controller to navigate within USB LOADER GX, which I found very nice :D

Wait, how would I install the Wii/GC games on the Wii U HDD when it's formatted to the Wii U and seemingly inaccessible from my PC?

Nintendo created special WiiU games you download from WiiU eShop, which contains a Wii game (xenoblade for example). these channels are called "Wii Virtual Console". Like if you play NES virtual console, or SNES virtual console on WiiU, there are also some Wii Virtual console for wiiU.
The idea is to get one of these eShop Wii game as WiiU installable channel, edit the Wii game with another Wii game or a homebrew (nintendont if you want Gamecube game), and install the result on the WiiU HDD.
this is called "injection".

There is a thread to create WiiVC injection; look for WiiVC script injection on WiiU hacking section.

You don't access the WiiU HDD on your computer, you generate a WiiVC game on PC that you install with WUP Installer on your console or WiiU HDD.

Hey all,

Wondering if anyone is having the same issue.

Followed the guide on the first page, did it all to the letter, but still get a black screen on all USB loaders when loading Wii games.
GC games work flawlessly.

Tried switching cIOS's, video modes, different Wii formats, etc
Used v10 beta 52, and also 53, no luck.

Is there any known issues with modding a version 5.5.3 Wii U vWii from scratch with this guide?

Everything else works besides Wii games.

hmm.... maybe.....don't use flash drive?
you didn't tell which device you are using, but I'll just guess you are not using a real HDD, but instead you are using flash drives (usb keys, usb stick, etc.)

don't use r53, it's worse.

I'm using an external 2 TB drive, powered by a externally powered hub with only that drive plugged into it. Ordering a Y cable to test as well.

Works perfect for game cube games with Nintendont and also for Wii U games with another drive
Is there anyway to get other diagnostics besides syscheck? Syscheck looks correct according to this guide

HUB are not working with cIOS (so, no USB Loaders for wii games).
It works only with IOS58 (nintendont, other homebrew like emulators).

You can use the HUB as additional power source, where you plug your y-cable power into, but the drive or the y-cable data should not use HUB and be connected directly to USB Port 0 (back-top).

Ah that's probably my issue then. The loaders show all my Wii games + their channel preview, just launching is the issue, but I did have to switch to IOS58 to reliably detect my drive.

Thanks Cyan! I'll wait for the y cable to arrive

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.
