question does the firmware update update me to 4.0 sorry if this is an obvious question but after that you say to use preloader also once this is done i want to know if i really need a wad manager channel in my sd card or even the homebrew channel or can i just keep that on my system menu.

also how many people did use this guide or did something like this because like moviecouple there are alot guides out there and CopyCaet says whenever he tries this his system menu gets corrupted someone locate me to a guide that works with no problems should i choose to follow this guide or the other guides moviecouple gave a link to.i don't want to be bricked i just want to get to wii v4.0 without any problems.

the firmware updater gives you system menu 4.0 yes, you dont need WAD manager unless you want disc channel loading

follow the instructions and you will be fine. you dont need disc channel loading but if you do install the CIOS60 it says corrupt but fixed by reinstalling preloader (tested myself)

3) Install CIOS60BF.wad

google "CIOS60HK.zip"

4) Your system menu will now say "System Files Corrupt" but dont worry just hold reset and launch Homebrew Channel and install Preloader AGAIN

If you decide to downgrade back to 3.2

http://www.teknoconsolas.tv/wanin/cIOS-Downgrader_v1.2.zip

Sorry to ask again but... are you 100% sure about that? how come preloader still works? (if it was what you mean by : just hold reset and launch HBC)

Sounds a bit risky.

Yes i am positive as I just did this myself to make sure it works
nintendolinky also confirmed this earlier in this thread

Disc Channel Loading is purely OPTIONAL and yes there are some risks involved
Just updating to 4.0 is completely SAFE

What's the 'Install CIOS60BF.wad' step? Isn't a custom IOS60 already installed by the patcher in an earlier step?

Just to be completely clear:

1) I don't uninstall softmii and just start at step 1 of your guide

2) after installing preloader the first time, I use the CIOScorp installer from softmii

3) Then I install CIOS60BF.wad (use wad manager, or do I use the CIOScorp installer from softmii?)

4) system menu will corrupt

5) restart with reset held and reinstall preloader

6) come back to thread to thank you

You can't launch in disc channel without it, optional but still, i wanted all features of my 3.2E back

This is correct just as the guide says. I used WAD Manager 1.3 but throwing it in the CIOSCORP installer folder works too

Ok, one final question; have you seen startpatch? I'd like the things it offers:

QUOTE said:
Wii homebrew dev aquilino has released an app called StartPatch that lets Wii owners unlock the Nintendo Wii's services and make them region-free. If you've ever used crediar's Starfall app before, then this is similar. Here's a rundown of StartPatch 4.0's features:

* Region free
* Region free channels
* skip update check
* No health check
* move disc channel

This release, StartPatch 4.0, is only for System Menu 4.0, however, so make sure you don't go and try to use in on other System Menu versions. You also run the risk on bricking your Wii if you turn it off suddenly while you're using the app, so be extra careful about that too.
So would I just use wadmanager to install StartPatch?

Thanks again

The re-install preloader trick to get rid of the corrupt system message works indeed, thanks. Was getting tired of using cIOS downgrader/update again hehe

Startpatch and Preloader dont get along well, just wait for Hacks.ini to be updated on preloader and it will have these features
Or use a reloader like Menupatcher that you must reload every time you use it (no install)

3) Run the IOS60 updater

say NO to install the shop channel

This part confuses me. Should we use Waninkoko's firmware updater (http://www.teknoconsolas.tv/wanin/Firmware-Updater_4.0.zip) and then the patcher from the hacktools.rar? Or one or the other? I thought Wanin's installer patched the SM4 files? If not, I stand corrected.

Edit:
Nevermind....I figured it out. My reading comprehension sucks today. I was up far too late last night.

That's all.

Oh, and thanks so much for a concise guide. Much better than a lot of the stuff that's flying around right now.

Thank you very much assassda, everything is working fine now (reinstalled CIOS60BF -> reset -> HBC -> reinstall preloader, CIOS60BF was the only part i was missing)

Now my 4.0E is like my 3.2E since we got hacks.ini for PAL

"If you want to load games from the disc channel you must install CIOSCORP"

What disc channel are you talking about. The normal channel that generally shows Wii or GC games loading?

"4) It is highly reccomended that you install preloader to prevent bricks. On the warning screen press A, 2, 1"

Do you mean the Health Warning Screen?

    @Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

    @SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

    A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

    anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

    Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

  • cearp @ cearp:
    @BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
    You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
    still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
    i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
    It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
